Kees van Dongen Furniture

Dutch, 1877-1968

The Dutch painter Kees van Dongen began his career as a poor young artist with no formal training who happened to encounter art by chance. Van Dongen’s distinctive style later earned him a place amongst the most fashionable artists of his generation. He was particularly famous in Paris during the 20s and 30s and was best known for depicting the modern woman. At the beginning of his career, van Dongen painted dancers and cabaret girls. Eventually, he moved to a studio, where he would host parties and balls and began to paint society women.

Van Dongen’s work can be found in the world’s most prestigious collections, such as the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza of Madrid, the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Elegant 1844 Lithograph of a Persian Woman in Traditional Attire
Located in Langweer, NL
This handcoloured lithograph titled "Femme Persane" vividly captures the traditional attire of a Persian woman, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and detailed craftsmanship of 19th-century Persia. The print is part of Auguste Wahlen's "Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde," published in 1844 in Paris. The image stands out for its intricate detailing, especially the veil and robe, which are adorned with elaborate patterns and vibrant colors typical of Persian fashion. The woman's attire includes a veil that covers the face partially, known as a "ruband," which was commonly worn in public by women in some regions of Persia as a sign of modesty and status. Her robe, layered and colorful, reflects the sophisticated textile techniques of the time, including embroidery and fabric dyeing, which were highly regarded skills in Persian society. The attractiveness of such prints lies in their ability to convey the elegance and intricacy of Persian women's fashion, providing a window into the everyday life and social customs of the time. The use of handcoloured lithography, a popular printing technique of the era, allows for vivid coloration and detailed representation, making these prints highly desirable for collectors and enthusiasts of historical fashion and cultural heritage. "Four at the Table", 1940s American Scene Lithograph by Woman Artist
Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most intriguing and mysterious WPA-era prints we have ever offered, this rare, possibly unique work depicts a group of two women and two men in intense conversation at a crude wood table, in a simple room with cracks in the plaster that show the wood lath underneath. The four almost seem like a group on the lam in a film noir from the period, desperately running from a crime of some kind. Two of the four face downward, deeply focused on the subject at hand, and another is lost in thought, a pipe in his mouth. The fourth is most mysterious of all, facing away from the viewer. but clearly animated and in conversation. The artist was Alice Harold Murphy...
