Larry Clark Figurative Photography
American, b. 1943
Larry Clark is a living icon of American film, a director, photographer, writer and film producer. His controversial works include the photography monographs Tulsa (1971), Teenage Lust (1983) and his film debut, Kids (1995).
Clark can be considered a genuine auteur, his work primarily focuses on the experiences of the American youth, exploring gender, sex, drugs, violence and subculture and have served us influences for contemporaries, including Gus Van Sant and Martin Scorsese. Clark collates images of the nude male, often erect, with that of the mainstream media. 1980s teen idols such as Corey Haim compete for space with rural teen Satanists, while faded newspaper clippings report on teenage villains, complemented by scenes of fellatio. Critics too often dismiss Clark as obscene. The reader is not encouraged to objectify the male form, but rather deconstruct hegemonic male masculinity and their concept of the "All-American Boy."

Larry Clark first made a name for himself when he revolutionized documentary photography in his classic book “Tulsa,” released in 1971, in which he presented straightforward, autobiographical images of violence, drug use, and adolescent sexuality. While Tulsa earned Clark a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for use toward his next project, that work was delayed over a decade by the artist’s heroin addiction and a stretch in Oklahoma’s McAlester Penitentiary. In the famous story of the great 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, it is said she was given her first camera by her daughter as a way to occupy her time while her husband was away. In my case, as with so many others, the beginning of the story was equally fortuitous: Knowing I was about to spend a year abroad as an exchange student, my mother gave me my first camera, saying I would probably want to take pictures while I was away. Neither of us realized how important that little Instamatic camera would turn out to be, and now, 47 years and over a hundred thousand images later, I present the different portfolios shown here as a reflection of the work I have made since back then in 1970.
One by one, my favorite films and papers have been driven from the market by digital media, but I remain loyal to this day to analog photography, and the originals of all of these images were made with real film, either color slides...
