Léon Jallot Furniture

French, 1874-1967

Léon Jallot was a French cabinetmaker who, just as modernism was gaining steam, preferred the pared-back elegance and traditional techniques associated with the design of French Provincial furniture and other styles that took shape prior to the 20th century.

While decorative flourishes and ornamentation were prominent in the Art Nouveau style of his time, Jallot advocated for the simple merits of good craftsmanship. He was a true woodworker, creating striking armchairs, cocktail tables and cabinets in oak, ash and pearwood that have a stately, architectural quality.

Jallot was born in Nantes in 1874 and started working with wood to create sculptural furniture when he was very young. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began working at the store of Parisian entrepreneur and art dealer Siegfried Bing in 1898. Jallot soon assumed the role of Art Nouveau director at Bing’s storefront. He helped coordinate and oversaw Bing's exhibit at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1900.

Jallot left Siegfried Bing’s employ in 1901 to become a founding member of the inaugural Salon of Société des Artistes Décorateurs. The organization was established to sponsor annual salons and encourage an interest in the fine arts and design. In 1903, Jallot also opened his own decorating workshop, where he worked on everything from furniture and decor to upholstery and textiles. He exhibited at the Salons of Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1908 and the Salon d'Automne in 1919.

Jallot introduced his son, Maurice Jallot, to the cabinetmaking business in 1921. Maurice took after his father in the impressive skills and passion that he developed for design, and the two became partners. They exhibited several of their commissioned pieces together at 1925’s International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris — the art fair that introduced the Art Deco style to the world.

Jallot retired in the 1940s, and Maurice carried on the business until the end of the decade.

Today, some of Léon Jallot's pieces are held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His furniture was also showcased at an exhibit in 2017 called "The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s" at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Leon Jallot Tiered Table in Pearwood and Camphor Burl
By Léon Jallot
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Early French Art Deco (transitional) tiered table by Leon Jallot in pearwood and camphor wood burl, circa 1910-12. 28” diameter x 29” high. Leon Jallot (1874-1967) Born in Nantes, July 24, 1874, Leon Jallot studied in Paris but did not go to any school of art. Without any formal training, other than a general refined sense of culture, he opened his own workshop at age 16 and began wood sculpting and making his own furniture.Strictly self-disciplined, he began as a wood carver. By 1899, at the age of just 24, he had worked his way to become Director of the Art Nouveau workshop of the collector, Siegfried Bing, for his shop called l’Art Nouveau in Paris. He remained there until 1901, overseeing production for the shop as well as Bing’s installation at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition. Jallot therefore participated in the creation of some of the Art Nouveau movement’s most prized works – those designed by the firm’s renowned threesome: Georges de Feure, Eduoard Colonna, and Eugene Gaillard. In 1901 Jallot became one of the founding members of the first Salon of Societe des Artistes Decorateurs – an organization which produced highly anticipated annual exhibitions through the first half of the 20th Century. In 1903 he established his own decorating workshop where he designed and fabricated furniture, fabrics, carpets, tapestries, glassware, lacqueer and screens. Jallot was the first of the Art Nouveau designers to turn away from floral ornamentation and to pursue linearism – as early as 1904 his decoration was limited to the natural grain of the wood – and he was an advocate of rich materials rather than over-wrought forms to suggest luxury. Jallot’s work was shown at the Salons of Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts from 1908, Salon d’Automne from 1919, and at the SAD throughout. A review of his exhibit at the 1921 Salon des Artistes Decorateurs, in Art et Decoration, said: “His furniture has the easy elegance of ideas created in a flash and then mulled over – ingenuity, savoir-faire, and patience are all combined in his work.” He created furniture for the Grand Salon of Une Ambassade Francaise and Hotel du Collectionneur at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which would, years later, launch the term “Art Deco”). From 1921, Leon Jallot partnered with his son, Maurice (see Maurice Jallot’s biography elsewhere on the Calderwood Gallery...

Leon Jallot Pair of Inlaid Amaranth and Nero Portoro Encoignures, c 1925, Signed
By Maurice Jallot, Maurice and Léon Jallot, Léon Jallot
Located in Los Angeles, CA
An incredible and important pair of Art Deco marquetry encoignures (corner cabinets) by famed French Art Deco designer and maker Leon Jallot, circa 1920s Paris, France. We just completed restoration to both cabinets in a gorgeous French Polish which gives incredible depth and vivid detail to the exotic marquetry wood. Both cabinets are signed on the top of the cabinets, underneath the Nero Portoro marble tops. Each of the bow front corner cabinets feature exotic Amaranth (Violet Wood) veneered doors with dual fluted walnut column front legs and ebonized banded marquetry of stylized birds and leaves. Topped with matching Nero Portoro marble tops, the most expensive marble available, that have exceptional gold and white veining over a deep lustrous black background. The interior is fitted with an exotic Amboyna Burl. The mixture of all of these rare luxurious materials (Nero Portoro, Ebony, Amaranth, Amboyna Burl) provide such an exquisite foundation to these works of art by Leon Jallot. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Considered one of the most sophisticated furniture designers and makers in Paris during the Art Deco period, Leon Jallot's works were included by Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann in the furnishing of his Hotel d'un Collectionneur at the Exposition International des Art Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in 1925. As a result of Jallot's combination of rich materials and a carefully edited design sensibility, one of his pieces from the Exposition was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, leading to inclusion of his work in exclusive exhibitions at the leading American luxury department stores, including Macy's and B. Altman in New York City and Wanamaker's in Philadelphia during the late 1920s. Léon Jallot retired in the 1940s , while his son Maurice Jallot continued the family activity until the 1950s. MEASUREMENTS: (overall) H 37" x *W 29" x D 19" *This piece is shaped as a triangle, the measurement of the rear corner to the front corners is 21" Marble is 1.25" thick CONDITION: Excellent restored condition. Restored with a French Polish lacquer. Nero Portoro marble is in very good antique condition with one hairline stable crack to one of the tops (see photos). The backs and underside of the cabinets were intentionally left unrestored. The inside of the cabinets are ready for shelves, contact us if you would like us to create custom shelves...
