Antique 18th Century Chinese Yoke-Back Armchair in Lacquered Pearwood. A stunning antique Chinese yoke-back armchair from the 18th century. A remarkable design - quintessentially Chinese and of monumental proportions. Should have been a chair for someone important. The design rooted in the Ming-style from several hundred years before this chair was created - showing straight and strict proportions combined with sculptural and flowing shapes all hand carved from solid wood. Remarkable to see a chair this 'boxy' could be so sculptural and dynamic in appearance. Also, this chair is quite comfortable to sit in. Whereas in Japan it was the custom to kneel on the floor or to squat on cushions, chairs were the rule in China from an early date - both for dining and relaxing. Set of two early Art Deco armchairs from the 1930s. Hardwood construction. Complete professional restoration / upholstery on request possible.  

A commanding matching pair of Art Deco lounge chairs in a rich navy blue upholstery. The armchairs have high backs and large shapely column arms with pleated fronts that surround the generous seats. Both chairs are raised on oak feet and finished with brass castors. The castors can be removed easily if the chairs need to sit flat on the floor. The armchairs have been fully restored and stripped back to the solid oak frame for upholstery with a new coil spring base, with hessian lining and calico coverings added before being finished in velvet upholstery. The lounge chairs came from a fine country house on the English and Scottish borders that was regularly frequented by the Welsh poet and writer, Dylan Thomas. The chairs are presented in their original condition and match the original design of the Art Deco suite before being restored to their full glory by Pointers Antiques...
