For this piece, she chose pages from The Penny Magazine started by Charles Knight in 1832, an illustrated publication that was released every Saturday to audiences in Great Britain. The hallmark of this magazine was the wood cut illustrations, a feature that appealed to the large portion of the audience that was still illiterate. The vivid silhouettes of one large stag dominates the foreground; a small black bird is delicately perched on one of the antlers. In certain segments the stenciled images are delicately brushed over with a thin wisp of chalk which adds a delicate textured effect to the drawing. This exquisite work is floated in a frame with blonde wood molding and acrylic glazing. About the artist: Interested in blending the old world with the new, mixed media artist Louise Laplante combines her original images with ephemera of the past, enticing a conversation about it’s “relevancy to the present.” Her compositions begin with vintage book pages, personal handwritten letters, sheet music, or instruction from old guides on etiquette or science. In the six and a half foot tall work, “Chorus”, a flock of multi-colored birds are stenciled on collaged sheets of handwritten music. They gravitate in a gloriously dynamic upward movement, illustrating their song resonating in harmonious unison. Other work is decorated with groupings of blue whales, billowy clouds, or gentlemen’s hats, while some selections are riddled with personal references that are blurred with whitewash. 30 x 35 inches, unframed chalk on vintage collaged sheet music This work on paper is being offered by Carrie Haddad Gallery, located in Hudson, NY Unique collage featuring contemporary Black and white graphic depictions of rabbits and birds in a bird cage on vintage sheet music. Louise Laplante introduces new collages made with antique paper from found books. Each work contains a story often about women, botany, or animals that is inspired by the pages they're built upon. In the tradition of scrapbooks or memory boxes, the work is also riddled with personal references which are blurred with whitewash “the way memories are blurred by distance” and finally encased by a surface of encaustic. Laplante’s career as a head university librarian further explains her love of books and ephemera.
