Untitled
By Michael Goldberg
Located in Austin, TX
Waterline Fine Art, Austin, TX is pleased to present the following work: Oil, pastel, and paper collage on canvas. Signed and dated verso. 52.75 x 47.75 in. 54 x 49 in. (framed) Gilded floater frame. Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...

Contemporary Collage, Fluorescent Neon Yellow Color. Framed in Gold & White
Located in ALCOY/ALCOI, ES
COLUMN FRAGMENT, LIME SQUARE An exhilarating standout from the conceptually driven "From Stone to Canvas" exhibition, this square-format dimensional artwork offers a brilliant juxtaposition of Renaissance architecture and high-voltage contemporary color. While the overarching collection honors the pristine white-and-gold interiors of the Cathedral of Granada—originally conceived by master architect Diego de Siloé—this specific piece shatters historical convention. Infused with an intensely vibrant fluorescent lime hue, the artwork seamlessly fuses the heavy classical monumentalism of the cathedral with the electric, neon-pop aesthetic of the artist’s celebrated "Pop Miami" series. Symmetrically framed and highly tactile, it is crafted to be a magnetic focal point in any upscale interior. Textural Mastery & Sculptural Process: Sartorial Construction: Channeling an extensive professional background in haute couture, the artist manipulates raw textiles with the precision of a master tailor. Intricate folding, draping, and gathering techniques are applied directly to the canvas matrix. Tridimensional Hardening: Transcending traditional flat painting, the draped fabrics are heavily treated and sculpted until they cure into a semi-rigid state. This meticulous process successfully mimics the vertical, carved fluting of an antique stone semi-column fragment. Neon & Classical Synergy: The audacious fluorescent lime colorway provides a striking, modern shock to the eye, making this square piece a perfect standalone statement for minimalist, eclectic, or avant-garde luxury settings. Curated Framing: To elegantly ground the explosive neon color and tie it back to the Cathedral's original palette, the artwork is beautifully presented in a bespoke white and gold wooden frame, elevating its overall exquisiteness and gallery-ready appeal. Contemporary Collage, Fluorescent Neon Orange Color on Black. Framed in Gold
Located in ALCOY/ALCOI, ES
COLUMN FRAGMENT, RECTANGULAR FLUOR CORAL Part of the conceptual exhibition "From Stone to Canvas", this vibrant rectangular artwork presents a spectacular collision of classical antiquity and bold contemporary pop art. While the foundational concept of the series pays homage to the serene white and gold aesthetics of the Cathedral of Granada—originally curated by the master Renaissance architect Diego de Siloé—this specific piece brilliantly breaks the historical mold. By injecting an electrifying fluorescent coral hue, the artist bridges her architectural inspiration with the high-voltage energy of her iconic "Pop Miami" series. The result is a fearless, highly textured statement piece that instantly draws the eye. Artistic Composition & Sculptural Technique: Sartorial Sculpting: Leveraging a profound background in haute couture, the artist applies sophisticated garment-making techniques directly onto the canvas. Expert draping, precise folding, and gathering transform raw textiles into high art. Dimensional Hardening: Pushing beyond flat painting, the manipulated fabric is painted, treated, and sculpted until it cures into a semi-rigid state, convincingly replicating the vertical fluting of a carved stone pillar. Vibrant Fusion: The brilliant fluor coral tones provide an unexpected, ultra-modern edge, making this piece the ultimate focal point for eclectic luxury lofts, contemporary living spaces, or daring commercial interiors. Exquisite Framing: To ground the vibrant neon tones and add a layer of deep sophistication, the artwork is elegantly encased in a bespoke black and gold wooden frame, finalizing its gallery-ready presentation.
