Neil Welliver

American, 1929-2005
Landscape painter Neil Welliver was born in 1929 in Millville, Pennsylvania. He attended the Philadelphia College of Art, and then went on to receive his MFA from Yale University. There, Welliver studied with abstract artist Josef Albers who had a significant influence on his work. He began his teaching career first at the Cooper Union, and then at his alma mater, Yale, from 1956-1966. He also became the chairman of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School Of Fine Art. Welliver’s style evolved from color field painting to more realistic depictions of New England landscapes, most notably in Maine. He settled there in 1970 but commuted to UPENN for his classes from 1966-1989. His life was marked by frequent tragedies. In 1975, a fire consumed his entire home, studio, and all of his art. Over the next few years, his second wife, daughter, and two sons all died. He is survived by his other three sons. His work is in several museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Welliver passed away in 2005 in Belfast, Maine.

David Byrne, legendary frontman of American band The Talking Heads and author of How Music Works, was born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1952. Byrne is a multi-intrumentalist most known for his high-energy performances and distinctive, wide-ranging voice. He formed The Talking Heads with fellow RISD student, Chris Frantz, and Frantz's girlfriend, Tina Weymouth, in 1975 while living in New York City. In 1990 he founded the world music record label Luaka Bop, which released music from artists including Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, and Zap Mama. Byrne's solo career has been broad and multi-disciplinary. Since the 1990s, Byrne has exhibited his visual artwork at numerous galleries including Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York City. In 2006 he released Arboretum, a collection of his philosophical drawings, published by McSweeney's. Byrne's drawings are what he calls "mental maps of imaginary territory." Says Byrne, "if you can draw a relationship, it can exist... the world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed—to be a sealed sensible box—it shows us something completely surprising." In 2010, Byrne exhibited his piece "Guitar Pedals...

Archival pigment print on Moab Entrada 290gsm Measures: 23.75 x 18.75 in 60.3 x 47.6 cm Edition of 100 This work is signed and numbered by the artist, (2016) Images in Debris depicts time lapse photographs of the sky, taken by the artist, at sunrise and sunset. The images, captured digitally, are then printed via a 4-color screen printing process. Each color separation is screen printed and then smeared while the ink is still wet, foregrounding a handmade process that involves tactility, registration, wetness, and specificity of touch. The images of the sun at dusk and dawn are at once universal and highly specific, recording a period of time on a particular day and in a particular place. By objectively recording the images and then breaking them apart and putting them back together, Sze explores the fragility of time passing and our desire for intimacy and touch in the face of both overwhelming natural forces and the ubiquitous images that surround us daily. Sarah Sze...

Print Full bleed six-color silkscreen printed on Letra Ecru 300 gsm Measures: 34.00 x 24.50 in 86.4 x 62.2 cm Edition of 50 This work is signed and numbered by the artist on recto. The imagery for this edition is derived in part from what Michael Bauer calls his “telephone drawings”—quick, loose sketches made while talking on the phone or otherwise distracted. Bauer saves these doodles, no matter how rough or silly, and uses them as raw materials to be copied, scanned, altered, and combined. Bauer often works in series, making groups of paintings that metaphorically “talk back” to one another while simultaneously standing on their own as individual works. As he says, “Every painting that I do relies on the last twenty I did.” In a neat literalization of his process, this print includes the words “baba” and “creme,” recurring terms Bauer uses as verbal readymades for their phonetic qualities and mutable meanings. The amorphic, animalistic forms of German painter Michael Bauer are built upon color washes, meandering lines, and bulbous protrusions. Utilizing a variety of rendering techniques and materials, including pointillism, text and high-chroma colors, Bauer transforms his free-form compositions into dynamic and ornamented abstractions. He borrows from the colorful tradition of Modernist composition, juxtaposing collaged cutouts with a bevy of 20th century painting methodologies—including Cubist, Pop, and Surrealist techniques—to make the swirling paintings...

Print Pigment inkjet on HotPress Natural, 300 gsm Measures: 20.00 x 25.00 in 50.8 x 63.5 cm Edition of 108 Signed and numbered by the artist. This work is part of the Vera List Anniversary Print Portfolio, created in recognition of the exceptional legacy of philanthropist Vera List. It was the generosity of Vera and her husband Albert that enabled the founding of the Vera List Art Project at Lincoln Center in 1962, MIT's List Arts Center in 1982, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School in 1992, among others. These institutions joined forces with Artspace and six internationally renowned artists to produce this print portfolio. This print by Fred Wilson is comprised of a mashup of flags of Caribbean nations, presenting an idea about the relationships among the people of these cultures. Fred Wilson is a conceptual artist of African-American and Caribbean descent who's primarily known for rearranging art and artifacts in museum collections to reveal the inherent racism and gender politics that are often overlooked. First gaining notoriety in the early '90s with the exhibition Mining the Museum, in which he placed a whipping post from pre-Civil War America in a gallery and surrounded it with four ornate chairs...
