Niki de Saint-Phalle was born 1930 in Neuilly sur Seine, France. She was daughter to a French father and an American mother and she spent most of her childhood in New York. In 1952 she moved to Paris where she meets with other artists, among others Jean Tinguely who become her artistic collaborator whom she married in 1971. After Jean Tinguely’s passing 1991 she got health problems which made her move in 1994 to La Jolla in California where she died in 2002. As an enfant terrible ever trying to escape the bourgeois existence into which she was born, Niki de Saint-Phalle taught herself painting and rose to artistic prominence through her colorful monumental outdoor sculptures of extravagantly voluptuous female figures. Early in her career, she became known for the abstract paintings she made by placing paint-filled bags above canvases and shooting them—a form of protest against patriarchy and rigidity.
