Odiot Sterling Silver

Founded in 1690 by silversmith Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, the house of Odiot became quickly known as one of the best gold and silver workshops in France, specializing in decorative objects and cutlery.

The company found early favor from the court of reigning French king Louis XV, which laid the groundwork for later success. Odiot achieved even more prominence under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Gaspard’s grandson, Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, who took over the family business as a master in 1785. Odiot landed high-profile commissions by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, which translated into additional commissions by other royal families across Europe.

In 1827, Jean-Baptiste Claude handed the company to his son, Charles Nicolas Odiot, who would serve as the official supplier to King Louis-Philippe I and the Orléans royal family. Charles Nicolas specialized in Rococo-style silverware. The next-generation Odiot master, Jean-Baptiste Gustave Odiot, became the official supplier of silver to the czar of Russia and managed the house’s largest order to date: a 3,000-piece set of solid-gold dinnerware for Sa’id Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt.

Today, Odiot continues to produce exemplary silver and gold wares, from decorative objects to flatware, upholding the fine standards of the centuries-old brand. Odiot works can be found in museum collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris.

Direct from Paris, A Magnificent 4 pc. 19th Century 950 Sterling Silver Louis XVI Gravy Boat with Presentation Platter and Two Sterling Silver Inserts and Noble Crest by the World's Premier French Silversmith Jean-Baptiste Odiot, Absolutely Stunning - circa late 1800s. Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot, an illustrious French silversmith, significantly influenced the decorative arts in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His remarkable craftsmanship, innovative designs, and the opulence of his creations earned him an esteemed place amongst the royal and aristocratic patrons of his time. Born in 1763 in Paris, Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot was destined to be a silversmith, a craft that ran in his family. He apprenticed under his grandfather, Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot, and later under the renowned silversmith Jean-Baptiste-Claude Roettiers. This training period was crucial as it grounded him in the traditional techniques of the trade while also exposing him to the evolving tastes of the French aristocracy, preparing him for a successful career. Odiot's work was marked by meticulous attention to detail and a robust embrace of the neoclassical style, which became prevalent in the late 18th century. His ability to blend artistic beauty with functional design set his pieces apart. Odiot introduced a range of innovative techniques in silverwork, including his use of the repoussé method to create intricate raised patterns, and chasing, to refine and detail these designs. His mastery over silver casting and gilding also allowed him to produce pieces with exceptional quality and durability, making them highly prized collectibles. The prestige of Jean-Baptiste Odiot was significantly enhanced by his association with European royalty. His rise to fame coincided with the period of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was an avid patron of the arts. Odiot received substantial commissions from the imperial family, including a famous 179-piece dinner service for Napoleon’s wedding to Marie-Louise of Austria in 1810. This patronage not only secured Odiot's financial success but also established his reputation as a purveyor of luxury goods suitable for the highest echelons of society. Recognition of Odiot's talent came not only from his royal and aristocratic patrons but also from various artistic institutions. He was awarded the Legion of Honour by Napoleon, a testament to his influence and status in the arts. Moreover, Odiot's participation in exhibitions, such as the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie Française, garnered him critical acclaim, enhancing his stature and legacy in the decorative arts. Among Odiot's diverse oeuvre, his sterling silver gravy servers...

Privately Commissioned Napoleon III Sterling Silver Flatware Set with Rare Mother-of-Pearl Handled Knives, Original 5 Drawer Lockable Storage Chest and 25 Amazing Serving Pieces by Two of France's Premier Silversmiths "Bloch & Eschwege" Silversmiths to the French Elite, in Superb Condition - circa 1930s. The history of silver-smithing in France is rich and illustrious, and many prominent firms have contributed to its legacy. Among these, Bloch & Eschwege stands out as an exemplar of craftsmanship, innovation, and artistic excellence. Founded in the 19th century, this renowned silversmith firm has left an indelible mark on the world of decorative arts. Bloch & Eschwege was established in the mid-19th century by two remarkable artisans, Joseph-Alexandre Bloch and Emile-Robert Eschwege. Both men were passionate about the art of silver-smithing, and their partnership laid the foundation for a firm that would set new standards of excellence in the craft. Joseph-Alexandre Bloch was born in 1828 in the heart of Paris, a city renowned for its artistic heritage. As a young man, Bloch exhibited an exceptional talent for metalwork, earning an apprenticeship with a prominent Parisian silversmith. This experience provided him with valuable training in the art of working with silver and other precious metals. Bloch's dedication and skill earned him recognition in the silversmithing community, setting the stage for his future partnership with Eschwege. Emile-Robert Eschwege, born in 1832, hailed from a family of skilled metalworkers. His upbringing was steeped in the traditions of silver-smithing, and he showed a remarkable aptitude for the craft from a young age. Eschwege's family background and his own determination to master the art of silver-smithing made him a formidable candidate to join forces with Bloch. In 1855, Bloch and Eschwege joined hands to establish their silversmith firm in Paris. Their partnership was not only rooted in a shared passion for the craft but also a vision to create exceptional pieces that would capture the essence of French artistic expression. The early works of Bloch & Eschwege were characterized by a fusion of traditional silversmithing techniques and innovative designs. Their creations included intricately designed flatware, tableware, and decorative pieces that showcased their mastery over silver, gold, and other precious metals. Their creations soon gained recognition among the elite of Parisian society, attracting a growing client base. Bloch & Eschwege's reputation grew rapidly due to their dedication to artistic excellence and innovation. The firm's artisans continuously pushed the boundaries of silver-smithing, employing novel techniques and materials to create one-of-a-kind pieces. As Bloch & Eschwege's reputation continued to grow, they attracted the attention of European royalty and aristocracy. Their works found their way into the homes of kings, queens, and nobles, solidifying their status as one of the premier silversmith firms in Europe. The firm's most prestigious commissions came from members of the French royal family, including Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. These commissions included exquisite pieces such as ornate candelabras, intricately designed tea sets, and opulent dining services. Bloch & Eschwege's creations not only adorned the palaces of the Tuileries and Compiègne but also graced the tables of state banquets and diplomatic events. Bloch & Eschwege's works were showcased at various international exhibitions, earning them accolades and awards. Notable exhibitions included the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris and the 1873 World's Fair in Vienna. The firm's contributions to these events highlighted their role in elevating French silver-smithing to the world stage. Rocaille, in Western architecture and decorative arts, 18th-century style featuring elaborately stylized shell-like, rocklike, and scroll motifs. Rocaille is one of the more prominent aspects of the Rococo style of architecture and decoration that developed in France during the reign of King Louis XV (1715–1774). The Rocaille style has been defined as a reaction both to the Classic rigidity of the waning Baroque style and to the new interest in nature and the natural sciences. In French, rocaille means “rubble,” or “pebbles,” and style rocaille is synonymous with Rococo. Rocaille is most often found in small pieces of furniture and household articles, especially in such personal items as snuffboxes and hand mirrors. In wall decorations of wood or plaster, rocaille features shells, pebbles, and scrolls as well as flower, fern, and coral forms, all emphasizing brief, asymmetric single or double curves. The virtuosity of Odiot’s creations at this time, heavily influenced by the return of the antique style, and the frequent use of silver-gilt, unquestionably place them amongst the best examples of French silverware. Odiot’s reputation spread far beyond the borders of the Empire to all the Courts of Europe. Charles Nicolas Odiot excelled in the revived rocaille style, and experimented with many new techniques, such as electroplating, which he brought back from England in 1824. He inherited the direction of Odiot in 1825 and was purveyor of silverware by appointment to His Majesty the King Louis-Philippe and to the Royal Family of Orleans. Charles Nicolas was succeeded by his son Gustave who received the most largest order ever placed with the House of Odiot: 3,000 pieces of solid gold flatware...
