Piaget Jewelry

Swiss

In 1874, at age 19, Georges-Édouard Piaget (1855–1931) began manufacturing handmade timepiece components and movements in a workshop on his family farm in La Côte-aux-Fées, Switzerland. The company expanded into luxury wristwatches and pocket watches under the direction of Georges-Édouard’s son, Timothée Piaget. Later, Timothée’s sons, Gérald and Valentin Piaget, would lead a team of talented craftspeople into a new era of innovation for the brand in both watches and luxury jewelry.

The Piaget family name was trademarked in 1943 and a large manufacturing facility was established in La Côte-aux-Fées. There they would perfect one of their signatures: ultra-thin movements. Valentin urged his design team to “do what has never been done before.”

In 1959, the Salon Piaget was opened in Geneva, where Piaget also set up workshops for goldsmithing and gem setting, introducing the company’s inaugural jewelry creations and establishing a creative hub where artisans were encouraged to push the boundaries of their designs. In 1963, Piaget released its first collection of watches with ornamental stones set into their dials (the brand's stone-dial watches are undeniable classics of watchmaking).

These artful creations caught the eye of such storied tastemakers as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol and Sophia Loren. In 1967, Yves Piaget collaborated with Salvador Dalí on a collection with pieces featuring the Dalí d’Or gold medals of the artist and his wife, Gala. Gala would also inspire the 1973 Limelight Gala timepiece and the subsequent collection.

Luxury jewelry designed by the company’s artisans has often cleverly reflected Piaget’s watchmaking origins, like the Possession collection, whose swinging pendants and turning rings nod to the movement of its watches. The Rose and Sunlight collections of bracelets, earrings and necklaces, meanwhile, reflect natural themes with a bit of Art Deco style. Piaget’s watches, likewise, have embodied an inventive approach to design, such as the Piaget Polo watch, which was introduced in 1979, popular for its luxurious refinement and widely imitated in the 1980s.

In 2001, the Piaget Haute Horlogerie was opened outside of Geneva, a facility that advanced its work in watchmaking and jewelry. The Swiss luxury watchmaker and jeweler now operates as part of the Richemont Group.

To tell if a Piaget watch is real or fake, try winding the crown. On an authentic Piaget timepiece, you should expect to see the hands move smoothly, and the crown should turn easily. Difficult-to-use mechanisms or hands that stick or jump are indications that a timepiece is counterfeit. Also, examine the markings on the back. Most Piaget watches will have a series of numbers related to the model name, metal type and serial number. By cross-referencing these numbers with information published on trusted online resources, you can see if the numbers match the details of your timepiece and fit the Piaget numbering system. If they don't, your watch is unlikely to be real. For help with authentication, consult a certified appraiser or knowledgeable dealer. Explore a collection of Piaget watches on 1stDibs.

To know if a Piaget watch is authentic, check the back of the case. On a genuine Piaget timepiece, you will typically find the luxury maker's logo, the serial number, the model name or number and the words "Made in Switzerland." Comparing the markings on the reverse of your watch to images taken of authentic watches and published on trusted online resources can help you spot inconsistencies that may indicate your piece is a knockoff. You can also cross-reference the serial and model numbers with information from online databases to confirm a match. If you still have doubts about the authenticity of your watch, a certified appraiser or experienced dealer can be of assistance. Find an assortment of Piaget watches on 1stDibs.

Piaget watches are so expensive for a few reasons. For starters, the company has a long history of watchmaking excellence. In 1874, at age 19, Georges-Édouard Piaget began manufacturing handmade timepiece components and movements in a workshop on his family farm in La Côte-aux-Fées, Switzerland. Piaget also has a reputation for developing unique timepieces, often through collaborations. For example, in 1967, Yves Piaget worked with Salvador Dalí on a collection of pieces featuring the Dalí d’Or gold medals of the artist and his wife, Gala. Piaget watches also feature costly materials, such as 18-karat gold and platinum, which adds to their prices. Plus, many Piaget timepieces take several months to craft from start to finish, increasing labor costs and leading to a limited supply that contributes to Piaget's lofty price points. Explore a large selection of Piaget watches on 1stDibs.

To wind a Piaget watch, pull out the winding crown located on the side. Turn it clockwise until you detect resistance. For a full wind, you will normally need to twist about 20 times. On 1stDibs, find a range of Piaget watches.

Yes, Piaget is a luxury brand. In fact, many experts consider the Swiss watchmaker to be one of the most influential innovators in the luxury watch industry. Piaget’s bracelet watch straps are frequently made of yellow gold or white gold, and its cases are adorned with diamonds, emeralds and other gemstones. In the 1980s, Piaget brought verve and color to time telling with hard-stone dials crafted from unusual materials such as lapis lazuli, jade, turquoise, opal and onyx, thus reinvigorating the watch industry with optimism and ingenuity during the quartz crisis. Designers at Piaget Polo led by CEO Chabi Nouri designed the Piaget Polo S watch. Unveiled in July 2021, the watch draws inspiration from the original Piaget Polo created by Yves G. Piaget in 1979. Shop a collection of vintage Piaget Polo watches on 1stDibs.

To tell if a Piaget watch is real, examine its markings. On real timepieces, you should see the correct Piaget logo, the model name, the serial number, the metal hallmark and a stamp that reads "Made in Switzerland." If your watch is missing any of these markings or if there are misspellings or unevenly spaced or misaligned characters, it may be a replica. Next, cross-reference the serial number and model name with information published on trusted online resources to see if these are the right markings for your particular watch. For assistance with the authentication process, consult a certified appraiser or other knowledgeable expert. Explore a collection of Piaget watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024
Yes, Piaget is generally considered to be a good brand for jewelry. The Swiss watchmaker puts the same level of care and attention into crafting its jewelry as it does its timepieces and selects fine materials like rose gold and precious gemstones to use in these pieces. Luxury jewelry made by the company's artisans has often cleverly reflected Piaget's watchmaking traditions, like the Possession collection, with swinging pendants and turning rings that nod to the movements of watches. The Rose and Sunlight collections of bracelets, earrings and necklaces, meanwhile, reflect natural themes with a bit of Art Deco style. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Piaget jewelry.
