R.C. Gorman Sculptures

American, 1931-2005

Rudolph Carl Gorman was an American artist, born on July 26, 1931, in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. He was raised in a traditional hogan, on the Navajo Reservation. He became one of the Southwest USA's most famous and celebrated Native American artists. His signature works were Navajo women in a variety of poses. Referred to as the Picasso of American Indian Artists by The New York Times, his paintings are primarily of Native American women and characterized by fluid forms and vibrant colors, though he also worked in sculpture, ceramics and stone lithography. In 1973, the Metropolitan Museum of Art included several Rudolph’s works in an exhibition on Native American art and in 1986, Harvard University honored him for his notable contributions to American art and Native American culture. His admirers included Andy Warhol, who painted him on several occasions and who was among the many celebrities, who collected his art. He was also the author of a series of popular cookbooks. Gorman died on November 3, 2005, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Refraction (Contemporary Wood Panel Painting)
Located in New Orleans, LA
Artist's Statement: "Around 30 years ago, not long after I had started painting seriously, I was at a one-man exhibition of the great Brice Marden at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art when I visited the annex to get a cocktail. There was one other guy at the small bar table in an otherwise empty room, waiting for his coffee to be handed to him. He turned and dumped half of it down my front. I immediately recognized him as none other than Brice Marden. He apologized profusely, but I stopped him and said: 'No problem: how often is it that Brice Marden dumps coffee on your pants? They're worth more now.' We both had a good laugh. At any rate - I was certainly channeling his early work when I began work on this series. They are made with oil and beeswax on wood panels...

American Surrealist pipes and playing cards spirit of Magritte abstract Montage
By Charles Green Shaw
Located in Norwich, GB
I love this extraordinary American surrealist piece - a collage/montage, an assembly of objects in a velvet-clad box/frame - for a number of reasons reasons. I love the fact that it depicts pipes, among the most iconic images of the surrealist movement, rooted in Magritte’s famous 1929 painting which depicts a pipe accompanied by the caption “Ceci n'est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe). Marcel Duchamp loved using pipes...

Two Women by Gorman
By R.C. Gorman
Located in Soquel, CA
Beautiful molded handmade paper relief of two women by Navajo artist Rudolph Carl (R.C.) Gorman. Signed and dated (1987) lower left. Edition number 60/150 lower right. Displayed in a wood frame. Gorman grew up in a traditional Navajo hogan and began drawing at age 3. He credited a teacher, Jenny Lind at Ganado Presbyterian Mission School, for his inspiration to become a full-time artist. After he left high school, he served in the Navy before entering college, where he majored in literature and minored in art at Northern Arizona University. In 1958, he received the first scholarship from the Navajo Tribal Council to study outside of the United States, and enrolled in the art program at Mexico City College.[4] There he learned of and was influenced by the work Diego Rivera. He later studied art at San Francisco State University. Gorman learned about the work of the Mexican social realists: Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo. He became inspired by their colors and forms to change from abstraction to abstract realism. He used abstract forms and shapes to create his own unique, personal realistic style, recognizable to all who are acquainted with his work. While in Mexico, he also learned stone lithography from a master printer, Jose Sanchez. He used lithography throughout his life as a means of making original multiple images of his inspirations, often working by drawing directly on the stones from which the lithographs were printed. Gorman moved from California to New Mexico, opening the R. C. Gorman Navajo Gallery in Taos in 1968. It was the first Native American-owned art gallery in Taos. In 2003, he donated his personal library to Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona. He died at age 74 on November 3. New Mexico governor Bill Richardson...
