This exceptional antique George V sterling silver communion set consists of a chalice, paten, spoon, pyx and two wine phials/bottles.
The surface of each piece is plain and unembellished.
The chalice has a circular rounded form onto a knopped pedestal and hexafoil shaped spreading foot.
The interior of the chalice retains the original gilding.
The paten has a plain circular form with a central circular well.
The impressive pyx (wafer container) retains the original hallmarked push fit cover and gilded interior; this box accommodates two communion wafers.
The original sterling silver spoon is ornamented with a ball terminal surmounted with a cross pattee* design in addition to the original gilded bowl.
Each bottle is fitted with the original push fit stopper surmounted with a hallmarked cross design matching that to the spoon.
The communion set is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with velvet and satin interior, which secures with a push fit catch.
The box is embellished with the original applied silver rectangular cartouche displaying the contemporary engraved inscription:
'Presented to, The Revd N.A.Walton, L.T.H, Curate of the Parish of S Augustin, Alston, Decbr 1912 to July 1915, by Parishoners and the Choir as a token of esteem. 19th Octbr 1915.'
The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Reid & Sons, Goldsmiths & Jewellerys, to the Queen & Prince of Wales, Newcastle Upon Tyne'
The chalice, paten and pyx were crafted by the collectable and renowned silversmiths Reid & Sons in 1911.
The cross bearing components, the communion spoon and bottle stoppers, were crafted in the same year by the Ecclesiastical silver specialist Frederick Dendy Wray; this was often the case to ensure the high quality of such a presentation set.
