Rita Greig Figurative Paintings

British, 1918-2011

Rita Greig was born in Norwich, Norfolk and trained as a designer in London, after which she taught art. Greig regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, Galerie George, Patterson Fine Arts, London, Alpine Gallery, London and the Mall Galleries, London. Working mainly in oils, Greig's paintings are usually small in size, depicting landscapes, still life and interiors as well as figures at village fêtes and carnivals. Greig was an avid exhibitor, she was consequently awarded the Médaille D'argent at Paris Salon and remained a member of the Royal West of England Academy for most of her life. Examples of her paintings are in the collection of the Chase Manhattan Bank. She retired to South Devon with husband, and fellow artist Donald Greig, where she resided until she died in 2011.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...
