Stephen Schulz (American, b. 1948) is an artist who has lived and worked in Fresno and Santa Cruz, California, and Cedar Grove, New Jersey. He has studied privately with Julie Connell, Jan Daniels, Michele Faia, Elle Fielder, Sal Pecoraro, Susan Stover, and Chris Volpe. Artist’s Statement: “My painting and artistic expression opens the doorway into an unconscious and creative world, where an uninhibited expression can take place, as one becomes immersed without the perception of time. Painting and design started it. From the beginning the process of transforming materials into art has struck me as a magical alchemy and, over the years, that mysterious process has had its hold on me, leading me from hobby to art. The creative process fills me with a sense of wonder and has proven a most amenable vehicle for transforming inner vision to outer reality. I paint from the inside out. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, my unconscious is the region of the most fertile of creative soil. I love working with a full complement of colors but often find my design direction working within the narrow spectrum of black and white, shadow and light. Some of my early inspiration comes from the New York School and artists such as Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock. Their ideas and techniques have helped to free my mind to explore areas of the unconscious that aren’t restricted by the world of right and wrong, good and bad. "Behind the Mask" Abstract Bronze Sculpture 21x12x7 in Ed. 4/8 by Ahmed Magdy Medium: Bronze sculpture with metal base About the Artist: Ahmed Magdy (b. 1987, Assiut, Egypt) is an Egyptian sculptor and visual artist whose practice investigates the intersections of cultural identity, collective memory, and the enduring dialogue between ancient civilizations and contemporary human experience. Raised in Upper Egypt, amid one of the richest landscapes of ancient Egyptian heritage, Magdy developed an early visual consciousness shaped by temples, archaeological sites, and the cultural legacy that stretches along the Nile Valley. Equally influential was the folklore of Upper Egypt: its myths, oral traditions, rituals, and social customs, which continues to inform the symbolic language of his work. Magdy graduated from the Faculty of Specific Education, Department of Art Education, Assiut University, in 2008. His engagement with sculpture, however, began several years earlier through intensive study and studio practice under two of Egypt’s leading contemporary sculptors, Mamdouh El Kook and Abdel Hadi El Weshahi. Working closely alongside El Weshahi in the completion of several sculptural projects provided Magdy with invaluable insight into one of the most significant sculptural practices in modern Egypt. For more than two decades, Magdy has developed a sculptural language rooted in the visual legacy of ancient Egyptian civilization while addressing contemporary questions of identity, memory, humanity, place, and cultural transformation. Rather than reproducing historical forms, his work reinterprets archaeological and symbolic references through a contemporary visual vocabulary, seeking to establish an ongoing conversation between history and the present. His sculptures frequently explore themes of belonging, coexistence, resilience, and the shared human condition, positioning cultural heritage as a living source of dialogue rather than a static historical reference. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, biennials, symposia, and international cultural projects. Notable exhibitions include his solo exhibition States at Azad Art Gallery, Cairo (2023); the Arab Artists Exhibition within the International Ceramic Fair in Jingdezhen, China (2023); Echo of the Soul in New Delhi, India (2025); and exhibitions at the Grosseto Foundation for Culture and the Luzzetti Museum in Italy, alongside participation in the First Grosseto International Sculpture Symposium (2025). Magdy has maintained a long-standing artistic relationship with China. In 2015, he received an official invitation from the Ministry of Culture of China to design a permanent sculpture for the China–Arab Friendship Garden in Yinchuan. In 2018, he participated in the Rouchi City International Sculpture Exhibition, where he received Fourth Prize among seventy-five artists representing countries from around the world. His works are included in the collections of the Rouchi Museum and the Jingdezhen Contemporary Ceramic Art Museum. He was also invited as an artist-in-residence at Taoxichuan Art Center in Jingdezhen, one of the world’s leading centers for contemporary ceramic art.
