Robin Tanner Art

British, 1904-1988

Robin Tanner was an English artist, etcher and printmaker, born in the UK, in 1904. He followed in the visionary tradition of Samuel Palmer and English neo-romanticism. His etchings began following night-school classes at Goldsmiths College, London. Tanner had been inspired by the major Samuel Palmer retrospective exhibition organized by Martin Hardie in London in 1926, and his first etching was made in that year. He was particularly moved by Palmer's early Shoreham works which had been so influential on fellow students such as Paul Drury, William Larkins and Graham Sutherland. Tanner also acknowledged his admiration for the technical craftsmanship of the older etcher, F.L. Griggs. Tanner was thus part of the etching revival in England.

Final state published by in an editon of 12 by Garton & Cooke in 1982 (Nicolson published an edition of 40 in 1927). In states iii and iv, the swallow of the title was removed. In state iv, the sky was re-etched and the cross-hatching was slightly finer. Signed in pencil. Garton writes, page 11: "The design was based on the Anglican chapel-of-ease is the farmyard of Bulisge at Allinston near Chippenham....The print was originally entitled The First Swallow, but the swallow was burnished out before the 1927 edition....Fifty years later new work was effected in the worn-out areas of the sky and distance to produce prints which, in his opinion, were better than those of the original edition." Restaurant in Mott Street

By Charles Frederick William Mielatz

Located in New Orleans, LA

The image depicts a restaurant on New York's Mott Street with ornamental iron work on the balconies. There are six figures in the scene in various stages of contrast. Mott Street is considered the unofficial Main Street of New York's Chinatown. Ella Fitzgerald sang it best: “And tell me what street compares with Mott Street in July? Sweet pushcarts gently gliding by.” CFW Mielatz was an early influence on the drypoints and etchings of Martin Lewis. This piece was created in 1906 and it is signed in pencil. It is part of the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art C.F.W. Mielatz American, 1860-1919 Born in Bredding, Germany in 1864, Mielatz emigrated to the United States as a young boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. Mostly self-taught, his first prints were large New England landscapes reminiscent of the painter-etcher school of American Art. Around 1890 he started to produce prints of New York City and by the time of his death, the number totaled over ninety images. He was a master technician in the field of etching, reworking many of his plates to get the exact feeling he was seeking. Mielatz was a member of the New York Etching...

La Colegiata Toro (Romanesque Santa Maria la Mayor/Zamora province Spain)

By John Taylor Arms

Located in New Orleans, LA

John Taylor Arms created this superb architectural image of La Colegiata in 1935 in an edition of 153. It is #12 in his Spanish Churches series and is referenced as Fletcher #284. One of the most characteristic examples of transitional Romanesque architecture in Spain, the church of Santa María la Mayor is inspired by the Cathedral of Zamora, in turn inspired by the Old Cathedral of Salamanca. The tower-dome is usually listed as one of the four most typical in León together with those in the cathedrals of Salamanca, Plasencia and Zamora. The church was begun around 1170, and was finished in the mid-13th century. Two different directors of the work have been identified, according to the different types of stone used (limestone in the old sections, sandstone in the most recent ones), and by the barrel vaults...

Operation Sail, Statue of Liberty

By Cuca Romley

Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist: Cuca Romley– Spanish/American, b.1933 Title: Operation Sail Year: 1986 Medium: Color etching Image size: 17.5 x 24.75 inches. Sheet size: 22.25 x 30 nches. Paper: Tiepolo Fabriano Signature: Hand signed in pencil by the artist Edition: Numbered 5/10 H.C in pencil Condition: Excellent, has never been framed Cuca Romley is in her eighties, and currently based in Spain after spending decades in New York City. She was trained at The École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), a distinguished National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France. The artist won several noted awards for her art in her native Spain, and in Paris, France. She worked as an artist and also had a career in advertising, illustration and interior design, in Spain, France and New York. As an artist, she has had solo and group exhibitions first Paris, France, Monaco, Japan, Spain and the US. Cuca Romley’s etchings of both famous and little places around the world are depicted with a remarkable attention to detail, a style that belies her sophisticated sense of line and color. These etchings capture a bygone era of a city in flux, and a snap shot of a classic image of a place. Each plate is etched with patience and a thoroughness reminiscence of the earlier days of engraving, in exquisite and fine detail. Romley creates her intricate design on the etching ground that covers the copper plate. After the acid has etched the lines into the copper plate she engraves the details into the plate with a burin until the image is completed. For each individual print, a master printer must ink the plate and wipe the surface clean. The plate is placed on the bed of the press and the previously wet paper 100% cotton Tiepolo Fabriano covering the plate, is passed through the press, and that completes the printing process. After the printing ink has dried for a couple of days, the etching is ready for the hand coloring by the artist. There are often more than 30 colors in one of Romley’s images. Each print can take up to 6 hours to color; these colors impart a subtle transparent effect that compliments the delicacy of the line. 2016 Group Show - Guild Hall, East Hampton, N.Y., USA 2013-16 Barcelona Design Gallery, Barcelona, Spain 2010 Group Show - Elaine Benson Gallery, Bridgehampton, N.Y., USA Group Show - Guild Hall, East Hampton, N.Y., USA Group Show - Gallery International Naive Art, N.Y., USA 2009 Group Show - Gallery International Naive Art, N.Y., USA 2008 Group Show - Gallery International Naive Art, N.Y., USA Group Show - Guild Hall, East Hampton, N.Y., USA Group Show - The Winter Tree Gallery, Sag Harbor, N.Y., USA Gina Gallery, New York, N.Y., USA Guild Hall, East Hampton, N.Y., USA 2007 The Cordova Gallery, Greenport, N.Y., USA 2006 One Person Show - JP Morgan Chase, New York, N.Y., USA The Winter Tree Gallery, Sag Harbor, N.Y., USA 2005 One Person Show - JP Morgan Chase, New York, N.Y., USA The Winter Tree Gallery, Sag Harbor, N.Y., USA 2004 One Person Show - JP Morgan Chase, New York, N.Y., USA 2003 One Person Show - JP Morgan Chase, New York, N.Y., USA One Person Show - Galerie Select, East Hampton, N.Y., USA Group Show - Frank F.
