Roland DUBUC Landscape Paintings

French, 1924-1998

Roland DuBuc, French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, DuBuc moved to Rouen, where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time, DuBuc struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. DuBuc moved to other cities later, where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès. In 1950, DuBuc moved to Montmartre in a miserable building without water or electricity. DuBuc’s work gained support from galleries after he participated in the "Great and Young Artists Fair" in Paris. But it wasn't until the mid-1970s during his stay in Switzerland that DuBuc started to earn a comfortable living. Upon return to Paris in the 1980s, his oldest collector, Jean-Paul Villain, opened a gallery that featured DuBuc's work in an important series of exhibitions. These sealed his reputation as a fine artist and gained him an international clientele eager to invest in his works. DuBuc died in his workshop in 1998.

Barge on the River Seine, Watercolor on Paper, Signed, Circa 1970s

By Roland Dubuc

Located in London, GB

'Barge on the River Seine', watercolour on paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides Paris into the left and right banks. This particular scene appears to be well down river beyond the city as the greenery along the banks points to. The Seine’s collection of lovely small towns happily graces its banks and proudly conveys French culture. Of course, the best way to experience all of these towns and villages is on a river cruise. The Seine is second only to the Loire River which is France's longest. It rises 18 miles (30 kilometres) northwest of Dijon and flows in a northwesterly direction through Paris before emptying into the English Channel at Le Havre. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided. 'Quay by the Bridge in Paris', watercolour on art paper, by Roland Dubuc (circa 1970s-80s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides the city into the left and right banks. The Left Bank, or Rive Gauche is famous for the Latin Quarter while the Right Bank is better known for attractions like Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, and the Louvre. A trip here simply isn’t complete without a stroll along this romantic river. And a cruise on the Seine or drinks aboard an anchored boat along the quay is a wonderful experience as well. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided. "Concert" Early 20th Century WPA Modernism American City Landscape Scene Ashcan The size of the canvas 28 3/4 x 43 1/4 inches. The painting comes directly from the artist's estate. It is signed lower right as well as signed, titled and dated verso. We have available more than two dozen paintings and works on paper from the 1930s - 80s that come directly from the Loew estate. BIO Michael Loew (1907 – 1985) was the son of a New York City baker. After high school, he was an apprentice to a stained-glass maker, and from 1926-1929, he studied at the Art Students League. In 1929, he traveled to Paris, North Africa, Germany, and Italy with a group of artists. When he returned to New York City in 1931, the Great Depression hit Loew unexpectedly, and for the next two years he paid his apartment rent with his paintings. In 1935, he found work with the WPA where he painted murals and partnered up with longtime friend Willem de Kooning in 1939 on a mural for the Hall of Pharmacy at the New York World’s Fair. Their friendship lasted for the rest of their lives. In the mid-30’s he painted in Mexico and the Yucatán documenting the construction of a U.S. Naval airbase on Tinian Island. It was from this airbase that the Enola...

Paris Metro Station Les Abesses Montmartre

By Roland Dubuc

Located in London, GB

'Paris Metro Station, Les Abesses, Montmartre', watercolour and gouache on art paper by Roland Dubuc (circa 1960s). When the Paris Metro system opened 116 years ago, Art Nouveau was at its peak. The entrances to stations were designed in Art Nouveau style by Hector Guimard. Eighty-six of his entrances are still in existence. These have become iconic symbols of Paris although originally the style caused some surprise and controversy in 1900. There are two main variants in style: Those with elaborate glass canopies (two originals still exist including this one at Metro Abbesses) and those with cast-iron balustrades decorated in plant-like motifs accompanied by a Métropolitain sign supported by two orange globes...
