Ruggero Vanni Paintings

Italian

Ruggero Vanni was born in Paris. He studied painting from 1973–78 at the Istituto d’Arte in Rome, Italy, under the guidance of Italian artist Michelangelo Conte, with an emphasis on fresco and artwork conceived as a part of the architectural context. In 1979, he moved to New York to study art at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1982. While at Cooper Union, the courses of Erwin Rubin, a former student of Josef Albers, was essential in defining Vanni’s interest in colors as the founding elements of his work. Vanni lives and works in New York City, where he has his studio. He also spends the year working in Italy and Greece. His work has been exhibited in Italy and the United States.

Birth of Light - Abstract Gestural Oil Painting with Orange and Yellow Colors
By Ruggero Vanni
Located in New York, NY
Ruggero Vanni's Birth of Light is a 60 x 48 inch abstract gestural oil painting. It is an abstract landscape of vigorous brushstrokes and light, with a strong luminous central focus. The main colors are orange, yellow, and rust. There are clear references to the masters of the Hudson River School, also known as Luminism, as well as the Romantic paintings of English artist William Turner. Vanni states, "My works allude to natural phenomena, in a raw state, devoid of the limiting constrictions of literal representation. Nature is there, as a landscape, a view looking up in the air, or plunging down underwater. Imagery kept on the edge of recognition, so the final association is created in the mind. Contrasts of matter, color, light, are created to provoke emotional responses. In the large paintings the atmospheric composition is built by raised brushstrokes shattered and reassembled to reveal an underlying struggle. In the smaller works paper is cast tumultuously as a counterpoint to its inherent frailness. References to the history of painting are multiple and mixed: Venetian impasto and glazing, Luminist light, Abstract Expressionist texture, Baroque perspective. It is important to avoid mannerism, metabolize the suggestions and integrate them with empirical visual stimuli. Dissecting responses to everyday experiences into light, color, matter. There is no intent to escape reality, but to create a visual experience that communicates directly with our psyche; open to be reinterpreted continuously through our own evolution and the changing times." Ruggero Vanni was born in Paris. He studied painting from 1973 to 1978 at the Istituto d’Arte in Rome, Italy, under the guidance of Italian artist Michelangelo Conte...

Ver Vernat (Spring Swirls) - Abstract Purple Painting with Reference to Nature
By Ruggero Vanni
Located in New York, NY
Ruggero Vanni's Ver Vernat (Spring Swirls) is a 62 x 84-inch abstract gestural oil painting. It is an abstract landscape of vigorous brushstrokes and light, with a luminous central focus. The primary colors are purple and blue. There are explicit references to the masters of the Hudson River School, also known as Luminism, and the Romantic paintings of English artist William Turner. The connection to a spring sunset's sky is clearly there, with a feeling of motion, like clouds pushed by the wind, in a swirl of colors and shapes. Vanni works with various brush strokes, from very large to extremely small and detailed. As the viewer approaches the painting, they will be surprised by a continuous change in the texture. Vanni states, "My works allude to natural phenomena, in a raw state, devoid of the limiting constrictions of literal representation. Nature is there as a landscape, a view looking up in the air or plunging underwater. Imagery is kept on the edge of recognition, creating the final association in the mind. Contrasts of matter, color, and light are created to provoke emotional responses. Horti Chartae - Paper Gardens
By Ruggero Vanni
Located in New York, NY
In “Horti Chartae” (Paper Gardens in Latin) Ruggero Vanni created a landscape of colors and light, the two elements that are the constant foundation of his paintings. The tumultuous evidence of the texture is particularly reach because of the technique used. For this work Vanni started by casting several layers of handmade paper one over another to create a wavy and tempestuous surface. The strong colors that he makes by grinding pure pigments underline the folds and curls of the paper creating an overall feeling of energy. The result is almost a geological formation, perhaps underwater (Vanni is an expert underwater diver...
