Ruggero Vanni's Ver Vernat (Spring Swirls) is a 62 x 84-inch abstract gestural oil painting. It is an abstract landscape of vigorous brushstrokes and light, with a luminous central focus. The primary colors are purple and blue. There are explicit references to the masters of the Hudson River School, also known as Luminism, and the Romantic paintings of English artist William Turner. The connection to a spring sunset's sky is clearly there, with a feeling of motion, like clouds pushed by the wind, in a swirl of colors and shapes. References to the history of painting are multiple and mixed: Venetian impasto and glazing, Luminist light, Abstract Expressionist texture, and Baroque perspective. It is important to avoid mannerisms, metabolize the suggestions and integrate them with empirical visual stimuli. Dissecting responses to everyday experiences into light, color, and matter. This work on paper is part of a series that Ruggero Vanni has created since 2009. He casts several layers of paper that he makes. He lays them one over another carefully guiding them to create a surface with folds and fractures. Then the pure color pigments underlines the folds and curls of the paper creating an overall feeling of energy. The strong explosion of red and orange colors permeate the crevices of the paper like crystal and geological formations. The reference to nature and natural landscapes is always a constant in Vanni's work. Though always within an abstract composition, the viewer is guided through a visual voyage reminiscent of underwater landscapes, forests, sky or nature's seasons.
