Ryan McGinley Art

American, b. 1977

Ryan McGinley is a photographer living in New York City. Longtime friends with fellow artists Dan Colen and the late Dash Snow, McGinley's work often features seemingly real-life situations that have been staged and cast. Populating his images with personal friends, McGinley achieves a heightened level of intimacy with his subjects, a quality made obvious by their perceived lack of inhibition. As a result, his work emits an undeniable spontaneity, despite its staged production. Amongst his achievements, McGinley was one of the youngest artists ever to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Close has said “I’m not interested in daguerreotypes because it’s an antiquarian process, I like them because from my point of view, photography never got any better than it was in 1840… Photographs are often so big now that twenty or thirty people can view one at the same time, but a daguerreotype is the most intimate image made with a camera, because it is small and only one person can look at it.” Printer: Universal Limited Art Editions, East Islip, New York / ULAE & Brand X Editions Publisher: Doctors of the World / Art of this Century, NY Literature: "The Art of Healing" which catalogues the works from the portfolio. New York The Big Apple with Twin Towers (postcard hand signed by Valerie Jaudon)
By Valerie Jaudon
Located in New York, NY
Valerie Jaudon New York The Big Apple with Twin Towers (Hand Signed postcard), ca. 1987 Offset lithograph postcard (hand signed by Valerie Jaudon) Boldly signed inside the Big Apple in black marker by Valerie Jaudon 6 × 4 inches Unframed In the 1980s under charismatic and eccentric Democratic Mayor Ed Koch, the quintessential New Yorker, the city actively began a promotional campaign to attract more visitors, using the "Big Apple" theme - which, for a time, was ubiquitous. The concept stuck to this very day. The NYC Conventions and Visitors Bureau, a city agency, enlisted the help of many top artists in the region, including Valerie Jaudon. The Bureau's advertising campaign, which included materials like this promotional postcard featuring a Big Apple blimp in the center of a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline with the Twin Towers, was a resounding success. The present work was signed by Valerie Jaudon during a promotional event. This rare, postcard is long out of print and especially desirable as it depicts the New York City skyline with the Twin Towers - before they were destroyed. Extremely collectible when hand signed by Jaudon. We've never seen another signed by her. This was acquired as part of a private collection of artist's autographs from this campaign, so authenticity is guaranteed. Even though the 1980s was also the height of the AIDS epidemic - which hit New York City hard and felled famous artists like Keith Haring, in many other ways, the pre- 9/11 era in New York City, including the "Big Apple" tourism campaign -- seems quaint! Publisher New York Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc. Valerie Jaudon Biography During the course of Jaudon's distinguished forty-year career, she has been committed to redefining the parameters of abstraction. A member of the original Pattern and Decoration group, she is a representative of important tendencies of the larger Postminimalist movement. Jaudon was the driving force behind the influential 1991 Sidney Janis Gallery exhibition, Conceptual Abstraction (reprised and expanded in 2012 in an exhibition in the Hunter College Times Square Galleries, curated by Pepe Karmel and Joachim Pissarro) and has continued to work toward the development of a grammar of abstraction. Most recently, Jaudon's work has been included in several national and international museum exhibitions focusing on the Pattern and Decoration movement: With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972-1985, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA (2019-2020); Less is a Bore...

James Rosenquist F-111 announcement (1960s pop art)
By (after) James Rosenquist
Located in NEW YORK, NY
James Rosenquist F-111 announcement: Vintage original folding exhibition pamphlet published on the occasion of a 1960’s exhibition in Stockholm at the Museet Moderna: September 29th-October 18th 1965. Features a reproduction of Rosenquist’s famed “F-111”. Folding out to four portions, the reverse chronicles an extensive interview (in Swedish) between Rosenquist & the museum. Rare and highly collectible. Medium: Offset printed fold-out museum pamphlet. Condition: Quattro fold-lines as issued; good overall vintage condition. Dimensions: 5.5 x 11 inches (opening to 5.5 x 44 inches). Unsigned from an edition of unknown; rare. Rosenquist began the painting F-111 in 1964, in the middle of the Vietnam War. He positioned his main subject, the F-111 military plane, which was in development at the time, flying through fragmented images of consumer products and references to war. Through its expansive network of colliding visual motifs, F-111 addresses the connections between the Vietnam War, income taxes, consumerism, and advertising. James Rosenquist was an American Pop artist known for his monumental paintings and prints. Often appropriating commercial imagery, his montage-like works combined popular culture, surrealism, and historical painting methods. “Much of the aesthetic of my work comes from doing commercial art,” the artist once said. “I painted pieces of bread, Arrow shirts, movie stars”…”before I came to New York I wanted to paint the Sistine Chapel. I thought this is where the school of mural painting exists.” In his politically charged multi-panel painting F-111 (1964–1965), the artist offered a critique of the Vietnam War, with a medley of mushroom clouds, advertising, and populist imagery. Born on November 29, 1933 in Grand Forks, ND, Rosenquist went on to attend the University of Minnesota, before studying at the Art Students League in New York under George Grosz, Morris Kantor, and Edwin Dickinson...
