He married Flora Judd, his high school sweetheart from Grand Rapids and they moved to Brooklyn, NY. Gerrit's early passion was to create an art that would inspire and provide honor to the workingman. As such, he had no interest in painting portraits of pretty women, which were so often seen on the magazine covers of the day. Rather he wanted to seek out workingmen on the bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers of NYC, and paint them in their environments. He completed over 150 magazine covers, numerous ads including many for Ivory Soap...

Martin, Two-Sided fish

By Stephen Palmer

Located in Boston, MA

Artist Commentary: Martin is a two-sided fish, looking very much the same on both sides. This makes him perfect for sitting in the middle of a table or some area that is exposed on all sides. His fin is made of old ice pics; his teeth, bunched together wooden knitting needles. His base includes wheels from an antique Erector set. Keywords: Fish, mixed media, found objects Artist Biography: Stephen was born in Berkeley, California, and raised by a poet and a painter, so it was in his blood to become an artist. One of his earliest memories is of his mother painting by the ocean, using their car as an easel. Even though, over the years he has worked in a variety of materials, he came back to the ocean in the form of mixed media fish. Most fish start with a vintage crutch...
