Sven Markelius modernist stacking chairs red and dark brown 1931 rare set of 10
By Sven Markelius, SMF Svenska Möbelfabriken Bodafors, Bodafors
Located in Forest, BE
Set of 10 minimal and elegant lightweight confortable stacking chairs by modernist architect Sven Markelius. Designed and produced for the orchestra of the Helsingborg theater in Sweden in 1931. These are dark brown stained birch with lots of patina. We did not touch anything to preserve the almost 100 years of use. On top of the seats there's a faux red leather nailed with brass nails. Still in good condition with patina and traces of use. Some stains can appear. They stack easily by ten and form a nice sculptural composition.

Bas van Pelt Set of Six Dining Chairs for My Home, The Netherlands, 1930s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
These rare dining chairs from Dutch designer, Bas van Pelt, are testimonies to the less talked about, but brilliant era of early Dutch modernism. Van Pelt’s designs were only produced when an order was placed, therefore the numbers of the models are very small. The construction of these rare 1930s dining chairs is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a playful representation of early Dutch modernism. While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s’ straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this set of chairs is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. These handcrafted chairs have a solid oak frame and a distinctive backrest comprised of oak spindles. While made of solid oak, the design has an open feel to it thanks to the vertical and open spaces on the back and the structure of the legs. The slightly curved line of the backrest’s top nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, and show wonderful craftsmanship. The upholstered seat adds textural interest, complementing the oak’s beautiful colour. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and the expert craftsmanship, these chairs are top-notch both visually and technically. Placed next to each other, their appearance is enhanced even further. Bas van Pelt’s progressive designs were, in many ways, ahead of his era. The Dordrecht-born designer’s furniture models are quite rare, a few are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for Modern Art, Contemporary Art, and Design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor scratches on the wood. The seats have been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 19.68 in W x 21.65 in D x 37.79 in H; Seat height 18.89 in 50 cm W x 55 cm D x 96 cm H; Seat height 48 cm About the Designer: Bas Van Pelt (1900 Dordrecht (NL) - 1945 Sandbostel (DE)) was a well-known Dutch interior and furniture designer, known for the clarity and quality of his designs. His works created in the 1930s and 1940s are regarded for their progressive design and quality. While he is most well-known for his chair designs, van Pelt was also active as an interior designer. He also designed fabrics for window...
