Tammy Medlin Art

American, b. 1969
Tammy Medlin Biography Tammy Medlin (b. 1969) is a representational artist working primarily in oils. She was born and raised in Denver, Colorado but calls Charleston, South Carolina home for the last 21 years. Working out of her home as well as her inspirational studio space in Old Village, Mount Pleasant, she is surrounded by beautiful light and grand live oaks, as well as the vibrant shrimp boats at Shem Creek. “The beauty of painting out in the elements “en plein air” gives me the opportunity to see the true light, color, and atmosphere of a scene. This changing and often spontaneous environment allows me to capture the image with expressive brushstrokes and emotion, rather than rendering exact details.” Inspired by a household where creativity was the traditional pastime, her first pursuit of painting began at 9 years of age when her mother secured her spot in an “adult education” course in watercolors. This was the beginning of a journey of exploring art with multiple mediums and various courses throughout the years. Tammy received her B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Northern Colorado, and worked in the sports medicine field prior to relocating to Charleston, South Carolina. It was in Charleston where she began to give credence to her artistic pursuits. Upon relocating, she began a decorative painting business focusing on architectural finishes, and plasters. After building a successful business for 5 years, art took a back seat to raising her two children with her husband Bobby. In 2015, Tammy had her first introduction to the experience of painting in oil. This opened up a whole new world from which she hasn’t looked back. Tammy studied regularly under long-time mentor Laurie Meyer as well as expanding her education with other renowned artists including Kim English, James Richards, Colin Page and most recently Scott Christiansen. She is a member of the Plein Air Artists Colorado, The Oil Painters of America, as well as the American Impressionist Society to which she was awarded into the 3rd Annual Small Works Exhibition. Driven by painting and a love for travel, you can find Tammy dividing her time between the beaches, marshes, and incredible architecture of Charleston, and the rugged pristine natural beauty of Colorado. The adventure and imagery collected from these travels are a continual source of inspiration. “While landscapes may be a favorite, I find appeal in capturing the light and shadow of architecture, just as much as the simple gestures of a figure. It is rarely about the subject, but the fascinating play of light and color that draws me in.

George Gardner Symons (1863 - 1930) Winter Scene Oil on canvas 20 x 25 inches Signed lower right Provenance: Private Collection, St. Louis, Missouri William A. Karges Fine Art Gallery, Carmel, California Private Collection, Washington A landscape and marine artist, George Symons was one of America's more noted plein-air painters who combined styles of impressionism and realism. His works are cited for their energy and simplicity, and he often did panoramic views. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1861, with the name of George Gardner Simon, but he changed his last name to Symons when he returned from study in England because of concern about anti-semitism. Not much is known about his early life. He first studied at the Chicago Art Institute where he became a close, life-long friend of William Wendt. They painted together in California and then in Cornwall, England in 1898. He also studied in Paris, and Munich and London, and joining a colony of artists at St. Ives, adopted the plein-air techniques of Julius Olsson, Adrian Stokes, and Rudolph Hellwag. He worked in Chicago as a commercial artist, and about 1903 returned to California with Wendt and built a studio in Laguna Beach and became active in western art societies including the California Art Club. He returned often, but maintained his primary studio...
