Thomasville Seating

American

Thomasville Furniture was once a manufacturing giant known for its chic designs and popular licensed collections. Today, every vintage solid wood Thomasville cabinet, dining chair and dining table is a charming piece of American furniture history.

Thomasville was founded in 1904 in the town of Thomasville, North Carolina. The neighboring city of High Point, home to Tomlinson and others, would one day be known as the capital of American-made furniture, while iconic mid-century modern brands Century, Broyhill and Drexel also opened their doors in the so-called “Tar Heel State.”

Thomasville’s initial offerings were limited to one item — the Thomasville chair — and it was known in its early days as the Thomasville Chair Company. People loved Thomasville chairs so much that demand surged for more types of seating and other furnishings. In 1922, there was even a 13-foot replica of the original chair design installed in the town square. Dubbed "The Big Chair," it was rebuilt in 1951 to a height of 30 feet and still serves as the town's most notable landmark.

Thomasville quickly grew and expanded, and was featured in hundreds of retail stores across America. The manufacturer also established Thomasville Home Furnishing stores to carry the company’s products exclusively. In 1995, Thomasville was purchased by Interco Inc.

In 2002, Thomasville unveiled the Humphrey Bogart collection, the first of two highly successful licensed collections. Inspired by the Art Deco movement as well as the Hollywood Regency style, the theatrical line of alluring mahogany chests, mirror-topped nesting tables and other furnishings positioned glamour and sophistication front and center. Upon seeing the collection, Bogart's widow, actress Lauren Bacall, remarked, "They haven't missed a trick."

This was followed in 2004 by the Ernest Hemingway collection, released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the writer's Nobel Prize. The collection, which included sleigh beds, chests, dining tables and more, drew on Chippendale furniture and the French Rococo style. It represented the largest launch in Thomasville's history, boosting the company's sales and brand image.

In 2008, Thomasville introduced a new signature collection in collaboration with designer Darryl Carter. The partnership yielded a line of versatile traditionalist center tables, seating and other pieces with a contemporary twist and saw Carter offering a fresh take on the classic work for which Thomasville is known.

In 2014, Thomasville, then owned by Heritage Home Group, announced the end of operations in its native city.

Thomasville Embassy Asian Chinoiserie Dining Chairs
By Century Furniture, Thomasville, Raymond K. Sobota
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Set of six dining chairs by Thomasville, from the Embassy line, restored with integrity and style. Includes two arm-chairs and four side chairs. Armless chairs measure about 19 inches wide × 20 inches deep × 41.25 inches high, seat height roughly 19.25 inches. Arm-chairs are approximately 21.25 inches wide, same depth and back height, with arms rising to about 24.25 inches. Design is distinctly Chinoiserie, with an Asian-inspired silhouette: the crown is pagoda-notched, the blade-like backs curve inward following the spine’s shape for ergonomic support. Frames are solid wood, original finish clean with only minor blemishes; seat cushions have been re-upholstered in a neutral blended fabric combining tones of gray, brown, black and white—modern yet complementary to the frame tones. Restoration has reinforced structural joints; the wood surfaces have been cleaned, polished, and detailed so the grain and contour shine. The overall presence is both elegant and bold—chairs that bring visual rhythm to a dining set, a media console, or curated furniture group. Suited for interiors that prize material authenticity, decorative nuance, and vintage pedigree. These chairs perform well around classic dining tables, or paired with wood, lacquer, or mirrored surfaces. Ideal for collectors and designers who value style lineage, tactile form, and pieces that carry both beauty and useability. Lovingly restored, set of six Nineteen-Laties Thomasville Embassy...

4 Hollywood Regency Chinese Chippendale Style Black Accent Chairs by Thomasville
By Thomasville
Located in Topeka, KS
Fabulous vintage Hollywood Regency Chinoiserie Chinese Chippendale style Thomasville black low profile accent occasional chairs, set of 4. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, all 4 chairs have natural, distressed edges from age & wear which we have enhanced giving them a gorgeous patinated look then added a fresh coat of lacquer. A couple of small holes in the vinyl have been repaired. They can be used as is, but most will want to reupholster. They are priced accordingly. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa 1971. You know, 1971 was a VERY good year… There were 3 partial solar eclipses AND there were TWO total lunar eclipses in the SAME year!!… The FIRST EVER Starbucks opened at the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington… A movie ticket only cost $1.50… Oh ya… AND it’s the year I was BORN!! (Hmmmmm, those eclipses may explain a few things in my life!) LOL…Anyway, how privileged am I to share a birthday with these MARVELOUS occasional chairs by Thomasville!!! This is a set of four incredible Thomasville low profile occasional chairs in the style of James Mont covered in a deep black faux ebony finish bearing a naturally distressed all-over patina on their frames. They have wide, square seats wearing lovely black vinyl or faux leather fabric that is nice enough to use for a while but eventually you may want to reupholster. Just think of the limitless fabric possibilities!!! They feature beautifully carved Asian detailed backs and straight square legs with a wide and sturdy stance. The front legs have a slightly turned in foot, but no rounded hoof look so not quite the Ming style, but we might say a hint or bit of flair. They are definitely bursting with styles of Hollywood Regency, Chinoiserie, and Chinese Chippendale magnificence and are sure to be a favorite new addition to your home! They are too low for use at a standard dining table; however, if you have a low profile Asian Chabudai (Japanese short-legged table,) or a low-profile game table, these would be a perfect fit!! Otherwise, you could certainly use them as extra seating in your living or family room or split them up and use two in the corner of your bedroom and two in the sitting room or study across from your fireplace. They are very versatile, composed of solid frames, and they bear an unmatchable and timeless Thomasville reputation!! They are EXACTLY what the designer ordered! The original Thomasville furniture company was founded in 1904. At the time, it was called the Thomasville chair company since the company focused on producing chairs exclusively. Over the next few decades, the catalog expanded to include additional furniture pieces. During this time, the original company went through several owners; despite this, the company still experienced financial success even through economic hardship of the 1930s. Vintage pieces from the Thomasville Furniture company run the gamut from chairs to dining room furniture and many different types of furniture in between. The earliest pieces from the company, when it was still known as the Thomasville Chair Company, are considered the most rare and valuable. If you are looking for authentic Thomasville vintage pieces, you will need to find them on the secondhand market. Thomasville Furniture is one of the most recognized furniture companies in America. You can count on Thomasville furniture for incredible dining room and bedroom furniture. – vintage furniture...

Questions About Thomasville Seating
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024
To tell if furniture is Thomasville, look for the maker's hallmarks. These marks usually appear on the backs or inside drawers on casegoods, under table tops and beneath the seats of dining chairs. Its markings evolved over the years and may say "Thomasville Chair Company" or "Thomasville." Most pieces also feature the Thomasville logo. If you run into any difficulty locating a mark, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can assist you with the identification process. On 1stDibs, shop a range of Thomasville furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022

Today, every vintage solid wood Thomasville cabinet, dining chair and dining table is a charming piece of American furniture history. Shop a variety of Thomasville Furniture pieces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Thomasville began making furniture in 1904 in the town of Thomasville, North Carolina. Shop a selection of Thomasville furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 20, 2024
To identify Thomasville furniture, look for the maker's mark, usually found in a discreet place, such as under a seat or tabletop or on the base or back of casegoods. Thomasville typically stamped pieces with its wordmark, which may read "Thomasville Chair Company" or "Thomasville Furniture," depending on the age of your piece. To find out more about your piece, you can conduct research using trustworthy online resources. If you need help with identification, consult a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antiques dealer. Explore a range of Thomasville furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To remove Thomasville dresser drawers, first empty them. Then, pull one drawer out to its farthest point. Feel around the interior of the dresser on both sides. Locate the release button. While pushing on the button, lift the drawer up and out. Find a range of Thomasville dressers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, Thomasville Furniture was not made in china. Thomasville Furniture Industries was a furniture manufacturer based in Thomasville, North Carolina. The furniture manufacturer ceased operations and production in 2014, however, secondhand options are still available at reputable retailers, including 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Thomasville Furniture primarily produced wood furniture, relying on mahogany, walnut and oak. The brand produced a lot of French and English revival furniture, Asian-inspired pieces and Mid-Century Modern pieces. The brand was bought out and closed operations in 2014. Shop a collection of Thomasville Furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
