Low Tide, Hanging Sculpture, Blue, Violet Torch-Worked Glass Chain Maille Links
By David Licata
Located in Kent, CT
This hanging sculpture by David Licata is composed of square links of torch-worked borosilicate glass in shades of blue from dark cobalt at the top, pale translucent violet in the middle and clear links at the bottom. The square links are joined together in a Japanese four-to-one chain maille pattern, cascading downward from two cobalt glass tubes supported by two metal brackets that can be installed in the wall. There are four layers of chain maille links in different variations of cobalt blue, violet and clear. The result is a layered, ethereal, delicate work that casts dynamic shadows on its surroundings and glistens in light. Transforming rods of borosilicate glass with fire, David Licata uses a variety of gas torches to pull, stripe, blend, twist and bend glass into ornate links which are transformed into an elaborate wall sculptures of undulating glass. Licata who is exceptionally knowledgeable and adept at creating historic chaine maille patterns often bases his contemporary artwork in that tradition. Licata’s sculptures explore the ideas of protection inherant in chain maille and linked fencing in contradiction to the implicit fragility of glass. Variously transparent and opaque, solid and ephemeral, his glass sculptures are solid forms and also cast shadows that are fugitive and integral parts of the artwork. David Licata’s work ranges from cascading glass wall sculptures to wearable chain maille. A devoted naturalist, he is inspired by hiking and the outdoors. The artist works with notions of the fragility, strength, vanity, and protection by using traditional metalsmithing techniques in the intricate torch-worked glass. David Licata is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art where he earned his MFA in Metalsmithing and of SUNY New Paltz where he earned his BFA in Sculpture and BS in Art Education. Licata’s artwork has been exhibited at SOFA (The Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design fair) NY, SOFA Chicago, Glass Weekend, Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, Millville, NJ, Talente Internationale Handwerksmesse, Munich Germany and The Glass Art Society Conference and Fashion Show in Murano, Italy. The artist exhibits and has executed numerous site-specific commissions with Kenise Barnes...

American Surrealist pipes and playing cards spirit of Magritte abstract Montage
By Charles Green Shaw
Located in Norwich, GB
I love this extraordinary American surrealist piece - a collage/montage, an assembly of objects in a velvet-clad box/frame - for a number of reasons reasons. I love the fact that it depicts pipes, among the most iconic images of the surrealist movement, rooted in Magritte’s famous 1929 painting which depicts a pipe accompanied by the caption “Ceci n'est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe). Marcel Duchamp loved using pipes...

"Philomena Dates a Photon" mixed media sculpture
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
This large-scale suspended sculpture is made from welded and powder-coated steel, repurposed highway reflectors, and a cut-glass sphere. It is pictured here installed outdoors with an optional welded steel stand, but the sculpture can also be suspended from another structure or stand, indoors or outdoors. Watch the short video to see "Philomena Dates a Photon" spinning from the ceiling in an indoor gallery setting! Jeff Glode Wise makes wildly exuberant sculptures. He utilizes such diverse materials as steel, wood, stone, glass, concrete, bronze, and gold -- whichever is the most appropriate for the aesthetic and functional purposes at hand. He then transforms these materials through various techniques and crafts honed for years through his practice of jewelry making: welding, carving, casting, meticulous fitting, plating, etc. Art and the making of objects have defined Jeff Wise...

Mianas Creek, Hanging Sculpture, Torch-Worked Glass, Blue, Green, Pink Loops
By David Licata
Located in Kent, CT
This hanging sculpture by David Licata is composed of free-form circular and oval loops of torch-worked borosilicate glass in dark cobalt blue, light green, light blue, teal and golden pink. The loops, in varying sizes and textures, cascade downward from a blue glass rod, joined together at different lengths creating a dynamic asymmetry. The glass rod is supported by two metal brackets that can be installed in the wall. The result is an ethereal, delicate work that casts dynamic shadows on its surroundings and glistens in light. Transforming rods of borosilicate glass with fire, David Licata uses a variety of gas torches to pull, stripe, blend, twist and bend glass into ornate loops which are transformed into an elaborate wall sculptures of undulating glass.
