Zin Helena Song
Origami #31 - Blue Green Orange and Grey Geometric Sculptural Painting on Wood

2015

About the Item

mixed media on wood 18” x 18” x 6”, 2015 Zin Helena Song builds a 3d structure with wood for her painting to sit. In this way it mimics somewhat of a skyscraper, or a building found within an urban setting. The soft greys and whites evoke the color of buildings and streets while the blue looks like a river, running through the center of the city, like the Thames or the East River here in New York. The title of her work "Origami” reflects the combination of geometry and playfulness as well as complex influences from Western modernism to Asian paper folding traditions. Zin Helena Song was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1983 and completed her undergraduate studies there at the Kook Min University before traveling to New York, where she earned her MFA from L.I.U. Post. Song is a painter whose highly technical pieces layer hard-edged abstraction on top of meticulously created supports. She creates each uniquely shaped panel by hand to augment the crisp geometric lines of her vivid and pastel color planes. The visual complexity of her compositions is diagrammed according to her notions of order and multiplicity in modern urban society. Her work is heavily rooted in her use of color, space, structure and geometry and how they interact on a shaped canvas. She sees in her work a similarity and mirroring of the natural phenomenon of society and life. Every color she chooses, and shape she uses, is connected to each other, and becomes synergistic, much like society.
