Stunning mineral stone pendant with wonderful colors in a unique brass frame.
The designer and artist who created this Arts & Crafts work of lighting art must have been inspired by the wonderful colors that mother nature has to offer in the late afternoons and evenings in the summer. Especially the copper red light that the sun creates when disappearing under the horizon seems the source of inspiration for this artist. With the colors in this particular alabaster shade AND in the brass 'frame' corresponding with the marvelous colors at sundown this one of a kind pendant really is a joy to own and to look at. In our experience it is also at that time of day that swallows are the most active. Just like the embossed swallows in this shade we too have seen them circling above and around a swimming pool in the Canary Islands. By the way, the workmanship that has gone into hand-crafting this remarkable chandelier is of a level that you don't find anymore in this day and age. Never mind the amount of time it must have taken to first hand-draw and then completely hand-craft this gem. We have said it many times before and we will say it again here: both with the light switched on and off, the colors in this alabaster shade are much warmer and much more beautiful than in our photos. You can take our word for it. Because of the many colors and 'patches' one could also say that this pendant (when looking at it from different sides and angles) has many faces. That too is the beauty of surrounding yourself with truly natural materials.

Antique hand crafted, stylized sunburst design two light flushmount / fixture.
This 1920s two-light flush mount has the most serene look and feel and you will hardly ever find a light fixture from the early 1900s era in this good of a condition. Thanks to its matt white, single color art glass shade combined with the serene looking, single color wrought iron frame this light fixture could not be more timeless. Thanks to the matt glass shade and unlike almost all other midcentury glass flush mounts, this unique specimen does not at all reflect any of the surrounding colors or sources of light in the shade. Mind you, our photos were shot with this flush mount very close to a window and as you can see, the matt glass shade remains pure white in all of our photos, giving this fixture its unique, 'tranquil' look and feel. Combined with the handforged in fire, wrought iron gallery around the glass shade this timeless ceiling light will also work perfectly in a contemporary interior. Unfortunately we don't know who the designer is, but judging from the Arts & Crafts design and the quality materials, we feel, this should be by one of the better known European artisans from that era. The combination of this flush mount's large size, single 'color' and its timeless design with the hand crafted wrought iron makes it the perfect fixture to complement an Arts & crafts, an Art Deco or a Mid-Century Modern living room, office, kitchen area or bedroom. With only four screws via which you can safely mount this rare fixture tight to your ceiling, this one of a kind light fixture also is easy to 'install'. Both with the light on and off this handcrafted work of beauty is an absolute joy to look at and it will perfectly balance your living space. A very fine pair of French 19th-20th century neoclassical style patinated cast iron figural torchères by A. Durenne, Paris, each representing a figure of a standing young maiden, her arms raised forward while holding a a flaming urn gas light (Now electrified) with a frosted glass flame, each raised on a veined grey marble column stand, both cast-signed 'A. Durenne, Paris'. Antoine Durenne was an internationally renowned French art founder. He attended École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 1842. Durenne purchased a small foundry in Sommevoire, near the Val d'Osne, Haute-Marne, France and established The Durenne firm, circa Paris, 1900.
Cast-iron had been in production during the 18th century but its inferior status to the more fashionable and delicate wrought iron had generally confined its use to architectural work. By the early 19th century, however, rapid developments of the Industrial Revolution combined with the simultaneous burgeoning of a new middle class provided the impetus for a dramatic Expansion in its application and in a short space of time a proliferation of iron foundries across Europe and America thrived on the production of everything from inkstands to railway stations. The use of cast-iron for garden ornament became particularly widespread at this time, as the possibilities for its mass-production at a fraction of the cost of bronze made it the material of choice for outdoor statuary...

With early 20th century light fixtures being one of our specialities, finding a unique Arts and Crafts pendant always makes our heart jump. Every designer knows that getting a truly striking design on paper is very difficult, but finding the right artisan to perfectly execute it is at least as big of a challenge. In this case the maker must have been a highly skilled craftsman, because the execution and the finish of this truly beautiful pendant are simply marvelous.
What makes this hand-crafted light fixture extra special are ofcourse the inlaid and large chunks of transparent glass combined with large and smaller stained glass chunks in beautiful amber color.
Both with the light switched on and off, all these uniquely shaped pieces of glass make this pendant a work of art on your ceiling.
Over the many decades the color (or patina) has made this light even more beautiful and this elegant design after more than 100 years still is as appealing as the day it was made. This perfect size pendant survived two world wars and for all the crude and organical looking glass 'chunks' to still be in there AND for this light to still be this pretty and complete is like an ode to both the maker and to this lights' former owners. They clearly understood what it takes to both create and take care of something that is truly beautiful.
