A painting by Paul Grimm. "Rooted Silence" is a landscape painting, oil on board in an earth-tone palette by artist Paul Grimm. It is signed in the lower right, "Paul Grimm". Paul Grimm (1891-1974) was an artist born to German parents in South Africa in 1891. As a small child, he moved with his parents to the United States. He reportedly was seen as having artistic talent as a child and, as an adult, attended a university-level art school in New York. Between 1910 and 1920, he reportedly went to South America for a few years before returning stateside and settling in southern California. Grimm gained much of his present-day fame by painting landscapes of southern California in the 1920s. Many works depict alluvial fans and desert vegetation in the eastern half of Riverside County. The San Jacinto Mountains appear frequently in his work. Most of the works are oil on canvas. A residence on Calle Palo Fierro in the Palm Springs Warm Sands Neighborhood was built for him in 1935. Presented in a custom hand carved gold frame measuring 23 x 29 inches. Image size measures 18 x 24 inches. Provenance: Private Collection, Denver Colorado Painting is in good condition - please contact us for a detailed condition report. About the Artist: Virginia True first came to Colorado in 1928 as part of her travels around the American West, during which she painted and sketched prolifically. She had been trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where she would have been exposed mainly to realist painting. Upon coming to Colorado, she was introduced to Southwestern Modernism, which began at once to influence her work. Her interest in Western subjects, namely landscapes, mining towns, cowboys and native plants, informed her work both in Colorado and throughout her life. True was educated in Missouri and taught art for four years in Indianapolis before moving to Boulder, Colorado in 1929. She taught art at the University of Colorado, Boulder and was the President of the Boulder Artist’s Group. In 1926 she left Colorado to teach at Cornell in Ithaca, New York. Her exhibition venues included the Denver Art Museum, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the Carnegie Institute.
