Old Fisherman's Grotto was founded in 1950 by restaurateur Sabu Shake, Sr. Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Shake moved to the Monterey area, with his wife Isabella, in 1954, where the couple raised their six children, all boys. Shake worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf. He eventually became a cook before quitting in 1958 to purchase a small restaurant on the Wharf, which would become Old Fisherman's Grotto. During his time as owner and operator of the restaurant Mother Teresa, Jim Carrey, and Benazier Bhutto dined at the restaurant. Shake worked directly with local fisherman and cattlemen, and Salinas Valley produce growers to ensure the restaurant provided local menu items. Shake died on December 5, 1998, of cancer. Today, the restaurant is owned and operated by Shake's son, Chris Shake. In 2016, Chris Shake requested to demolish the restaurant when the lease expires in 2021. According to Shake's lawyer, the rationale behind the request was because the city of Monterey was unable to secure a long-term lease for the restaurant. Shake wants to extend the restaurant's lease to 2041. This beautiful painting of Siena Italy is an oil on canvas, framed behind glass in its original gallery frame, by Susan Isabel Dacre. It was painted circa 1875. She was an early member of the Feminist movement and a member of the Manchester arts community. She travelled with Lord Leighton and exhibited widely. Indeed this painting retains an exhibition label for Manchester Art Gallery. This work shows influences of early British impressionism. The clarity and palette are light and airy. The painting depicts Siena in Tuscany, Italy, with houses dotted all around the hill with Saint Catherine's church on top. A superb Victorian painting by a noted female artist. Signed lower right. Housed in its original Harnell and Son London Gallery frame, behind glass, 17 by 13 inches, in good condition. Susan Isabel Dacre (1844 – 1933) was an English artist of the Victorian era. She was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, and was educated in Salford. For the decade of 1858–68 she lived in Paris. After a winter in Italy (1869), she returned to Paris, and was present during the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. She returned to England in 1871 and began studying art at the Manchester School of Art, where she won the Queen's Prize in 1875. She began a lifelong friendship with fellow artist Annie Swynnerton; the two women pursued their art studies in Rome and Paris between 1874 and 1880. Around 1872, Lord Leighton dictated notes and observations on his methods of painting and composing his pictures to Susan Dacre, during a stay on the island of Capri. From 1877-1880 she was in Paris at the Académie Julian with a fellow - pupil Marie Bashkirtseff...
