September 26, 1925-May 22, 2012 CARMEL, CA - Carmel artist, Vivian Cornwall, passed away at her home with her family at her side on May 22, 2012. Born on September 26, 1925 in Dallas, TX, she was the second of five children born to Charles Little and Daisy Little of Dallas. Following her high school years in Grand Prairie, Texas, she married Edmund Cotters of Yonkers, NY. At the end of WWII, the couple relocated to Grass Valley, CA and later moved to the Sacramento area where Vivian began her career as a businesswoman owning and operating four hair fashion salons. In 1972 Vivian married Ken Cornwall of Reno, NV, retired from her business and moved to Carmel, California. Vivian began her long-awaited chance to begin an art career. She studied with many notable "Early California" watercolorists and later with internationally known oil painters. Painting en plein air (on location) was her forte and Vivian could often be seen painting at her easel on the side of the road, capturing the beauty found in Monterey County. An avid traveler, Vivian painted and studied art across the U.S. and in Europe. Vivian held memberships in Oil Painters of America and the Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters. Her works of art have been presented in many exhibits and galleries in California. As an active member of Venture Gallery in Monterey, Vivian served both as a board member and gifted displaying artist. Vivian also served as a design consultant and made lasting changes in renovations and interior design for both Alta Sierra Country Club, Grass Valley and Hacienda Carmel in Carmel.

Vivian Cornwall 1925-2012 Texas, California Artist Size: 12 x 16 Medium: Oil on Board Signed "Fisk Hopper Grotto" Fisherman's Wharf Monterey, Calif. Old Fisherman's Grotto was founded in 1950 by restaurateur Sabu Shake, Sr. Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Shake moved to the Monterey area, with his wife Isabella, in 1954, where the couple raised their six children, all boys. Shake worked as a dishwasher at a restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf. He eventually became a cook before quitting in 1958 to purchase a small restaurant on the Wharf, which would become Old Fisherman's Grotto. During his time as owner and operator of the restaurant Mother Teresa, Jim Carrey, and Benazier Bhutto dined at the restaurant. Shake worked directly with local fisherman and cattlemen, and Salinas Valley produce growers to ensure the restaurant provided local menu items. Shake died on December 5, 1998, of cancer. Today, the restaurant is owned and operated by Shake's son, Chris Shake. In 2016, Chris Shake requested to demolish the restaurant when the lease expires in 2021. According to Shake's lawyer, the rationale behind the request was because the city of Monterey was unable to secure a long-term lease for the restaurant. Shake wants to extend the restaurant's lease to 2041. By Joseph Barrett

Illustrated in "Joseph Barrett, The Prime Years 1970s - 1990s", pg. 28, plate #031. Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Joseph Barrett (1936 – ) Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf. A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet. This little studio, containing cans of old brushes and hundreds of used paint tubes...
