This is an incredibly attractive pair of works by Walter Heath Williams of London. Born in 1836, Walter Heath Williams developed a rather distinctive style and space for his genre landscape paintings over the course of his career. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1845-1867 and was generally active in London until around 1876. With a tendency and preference for a canvas of 18" x 26", Williams regularly painted pairs of scenes that complimented one another either panoramically or in terms of perspective.
The present pair are no exception, each being a perfectly captured scene of Harvesters at work in a field of wheat beside running water. Bright and vibrant, the colors of each work are just so striking and nostalgic, the nearly cloudless sky shaded by groves of trees in the forefront while the laborers clear the field. Both are signed in the lower left/right corners respectively, the back of the stretcher retaining a label from the Parker Gallery in London. They are an absolutely exquisite pair of landscape paintings...
