Titled 'The Plaza, Sunset' and annotated 'no. 165' in ink, in the bottom left sheet corner. A superb, luminous impression in dark brown ink, with selectively wiped plate tone; on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 to 2 1/4 inches). Pale tape stains on the top sheet edge, recto, well away from the image, otherwise in excellent condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed.

About the artist:
Born in the small rural Wisconsin town of Barton, Harley lived a peripatetic life. As a young child, he accompanied his family to Lincoln, Nebraska where he found great excitement in the roaming herds of buffalo and Native Americans. It was in these years that a talent for drawing was discovered. In 1870, after several years of hardship, his father moved the family back to Wisconsin.

This Winslow Homer woodcut engraving entitled "Making Hay", was published in Harper's Weekly in the July 6, 1872 edition. It depicts a two men hand cutting high grass on a hill. The man in the foreground is looking at a young boy and a girl (presumably his children), who are sitting on the ground with a picnic basket.
This beautiful Homer woodcut engraving is presented in a brown wood frame and a light beige fabric mat with a black inner mat. The print is in excellent condition.
