William Kay Blacklock Art

British, 1872-1924
William Blacklock was a British painter who was born in Bishopwearth, Sunderland in 1872 . It is evident from documents from his youth that the artist appears to have added the middle name of Kay only once he had become an artist. William began his artistic training at eighteen as a lithograph apprentice. He then went onto study at the Royal College of Art after moving to Chelsea, London with his wife Ellen Richardson. He then went onto study at Edinburgh School of Art in 1902 and was commissioned to paint two paintings that would be hung in the chancel of St Andrew’s Episcopal Church. However, after finishing at Edinburgh School of Art the couple moved to an artist’s colony at Walberswick, Suffok. The artist colony had been founded by the artist Philip Wilson Steer and was a circle of English Impressionists. However, Blacklock did not adopt the style of the Impressionists and instead focused on traditional Victorian genre painting. William Blacklock’s subjects often focused on his wife ‘Nellie’ and his daughter Eleanor, who would model for him within rural settings. During his lifetime Blacklock exhibited seventeen works at the Royal Academy between 1897 and 1918. He also exhibited his work at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

The atwork “Dutch Interior”, signed by W. Kay Blacklock, portrays a warm, intimate domestic scene set inside a rustic European cottage. William Kay Blacklock was active between the late Victorian era and the early 20th century, with most of his mature work produced between 1890 and 1920. This piece likely dates from the Edwardian period (early 1900s), when he created many interiors in a romanticized Dutch style. At the center, a woman—likely a mother—sits quietly beside a wicker cradle...

"Rio Degebe at Sunset (Alentejo, Portugal)" Oil Painting

By Ulrich Gleiter

Located in Denver, CO

Ulrich Gleiter's (EUR based) "Rio Degebe at Sunset (Alentejo, Portugal)" is an oil painting that depicts the textural hillside of a bright colors. Bio/Artist Statement: German-born artist Ulrich Gleiter (b. 1977) is noted for his landscapes. His style is sometimes reminiscent of German expressionism and the Russian impressionists. He first studied at the Dresden Academy of Arts and later at the Repin Academy in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His work has been recognized with awards in the USA and in Russia and been featured in books and magazines. "Ulrich Gleiter is a citizen of the world. Born in Saarbrücken, Germany, he pursued his undergraduate studies at Dresden’s Academy of Fine Arts, where he learned to paint with the bold, colorful strokes handed down from the early 20th-century German expressionists. Students there prioritized their individuality — no one but you could have made this picture, they were told. Gleiter then absorbed a different view of artistry during his exchange year at Moscow’s Surikov Institute, followed by six more years at the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg. Today Gleiter divides time between Germany, Russia, and the United States, where he has become much admired among plein-airists in such scenic places as Colorado, California, and Wyoming. In our era of diplomatic tensions, when Crimea and Russia appear regularly in the headlines, Gleiter feels a renewed appreciation for nature’s timelessness — for its inspiring capacity to rise above the ins-and-outs of man-made problems. Today, he says, “I often think about the history of an area where I am painting, about how many troubles and beautiful things may have happened there. Most importantly, I am humbled to observe how natural forces never stop moving.” Gleiter turns his searching eye not only to wilderness, but also to the banalities of urban life — to parked cars, the glinting sprawl of an automobile dealer’s lot, retail stores, and even cargo ships. There, too — as in his portraits, nudes, and still lifes — he manages to find abstracted beauty and emotional significance in the interactions of light, color, and air."
