Dobson, Frank (1886–1963). British sculptor, born in London, the son of an illustrator of the same name. From 1902 to 1904 he worked as an assistant to William Reynolds-Stephens. He then spent two years in Cornwall, earning his living with landscape watercolours, before winning a scholarship to Hospitalfield Art Institute, Arbroath, where he studied 1906–10.
After returning to London, he continued his studies at the City and Guilds School, Kennington, then again lived in Cornwall, where he shared a studio with Cedric Morris in Newlyn. His early work consisted mainly of paintings, the few surviving examples showing how impressed he was by Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist exhibitions (Stanhope Forbes, whom Dobson met in Newlyn, had been shocked by his modernism). He made his first carving in 1913, but his first one-man exhibition—at the Chenil Gallery, London, in 1914—consisted of paintings and drawings. Robert Brady was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. Upon graduation from high school he attended the California College of The Arts in Oakland, Ca. receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1969. Later he attended University of California, Davis, receiving a Masters of Fine art in 1975. Recently retired Emeritus, he served as Professor of Art from 1975-2013 at California State University, Sacramento.
Trained as a potter, Brady’s interest quickly steered toward a path of ceramic object making and sculpture, ultimately gaining national and international recognition. Approximately 24 years later, Brady, fortuitously discovered the beauty and merits of wood as a sculptural medium. Since then, Robert has produced work in both clay and wood, with an emphasis on wood. Mixed media, bronzes, works on paper and functional pottery are also part of his output.
Brady has had over 50 solo exhibits and participated in many group exhibitions throughout the United States, and Europe, both in private galleries and public Museums. His works can be found in permanent collections in galleries and museums such as The Smithsonian (Renwick), The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock, and the Stedelijik Museum in Amsterdam, Holland, as well as others. Lastly, his work is found in private collections too numerous to mention.
He has received three National Endowment Individual Artist...

Wonderful matched pair, This is one of the most iconic items created by Hector Aguilar in his Taller Borda in the early 1940s. It is featured in Silver Masters of Mexico by Penny Morrill on page 120. She describes the candelabra thusly: “The eye follows the tumbling spirals as though they were lines in relief. Balance and movement coexist as the spirals push upward toward the light of the candles”. What a well-crafted description of this beauty! Made primarily of copper with brass accents, the candelabra's are signed on the base with a conjoined HA on a recessed circle, i It measures 10 ¼ inches long, 6 ½ inches tall, and 2 ¼ inches wide. I have left this stunner unpolished, as many people prefer to retain the rich decades-old patina. – exceptionally rare and hard to find – a work of art by one of the mid century metal Masters...

Best known for his remarkably inventive lamps, trays and vessels designed in organic, free form shapes, Arpad Rosti was a highly versatile artist, equally at home in both the ceramics and enameling fields. While most of his work was done in either clay or metal, in the late 1940s he also ventured into furniture design when he produced a group of tables in treated wood, mosaic, copper, and glass. His one-of-a-kind furniture was exhibited in 1949 at the Chinese Gallery in New York and written up in the New York Times. As further evidence of his wide-ranging talents, in 1972 he was commissioned to produce a stained glass window for a residence in North Caldwell, New Jersey which New York Times critic Joan Cook described as “a miracle of color and light.”
Born in Subotica, Yugoslavia in 1909, Rosti studied architecture at the School of Industrial Arts in Budapest. In 1940, he moved with his wife Ilona to the United States and settled in New York where he became a naturalized citizen in 1945. In 1947 his work was featured in an exhibition organized by the Craftsmen’s Equity and presented at the Barbizon-Plaza Galleries in New York. The organization, of which he was President, aimed to “put craft on a business basis without sacrificing the individuality inherent in handmade articles.”
Throughout the 1950s Rosti’s work was regularly chosen for the prestigious National Ceramic Exhibitions at the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts (now known as the Everson Museum).
