W.P.A. Style Terracotta Figure's Study attributed to Frank Dobson
By Frank Dobson
Located in Buffalo, NY
W.P.A. Style Terracotta Figure's Study attributed to Frank Dobson. Amazing sculpture... unsigned but please feel free to research Dobson's terracotta studysmm Dobson, Frank (1886–1963). British sculptor, born in London, the son of an illustrator of the same name. From 1902 to 1904 he worked as an assistant to William Reynolds-Stephens. He then spent two years in Cornwall, earning his living with landscape watercolours, before winning a scholarship to Hospitalfield Art Institute, Arbroath, where he studied 1906–10. After returning to London, he continued his studies at the City and Guilds School, Kennington, then again lived in Cornwall, where he shared a studio with Cedric Morris in Newlyn. His early work consisted mainly of paintings, the few surviving examples showing how impressed he was by Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist exhibitions (Stanhope Forbes, whom Dobson met in Newlyn, had been shocked by his modernism). He made his first carving in 1913, but his first one-man exhibition—at the Chenil Gallery, London, in 1914—consisted of paintings and drawings. After the First World War (when he served in France with the Artists’ Rifles...

Honorio García Condoy Carved Stone Figurative Sculpture
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Honorio Garcia Condoy (b. Honorio Garcia, 1900, Zaragoza, d. 1953 Madrid) figurative sculpture in carved stone depicting a faceless virgin (ca. 1930s). A contemporary and close friend of Picasso, Condoy drew a lot of inspiration from the shapes and composition of Cubism. Though this particular sculpture is from a body of work heavily influenced by Roman churches and symbolism. The half-standing, half-sitting Virgin, the flat heads, the erased faces - these attributes of Roman art are all present in this piece. The featureless, flat-skulled virgin figure enveloped in a self-embrace is perched in a half-sitting/half-kneeling pose. This piece is from a well-documented series (near identical example is seen on page 91 of Raymond Creuze's "Honorio Condoy"). Unsigned. Excellent, vintage condition with light patina/scattered light scratches, but no damage/losses. H: 37.5" x L: 12 x D: 14" Reference: Raymond Creuze "Honorio Condoy" (French, 1973). Reference book is included with the sculpture. From the collection of a prominent French collector whose London flat...
