Portrait of a Young Man
17th Century
Oil on oak panel
Image size: 4 1/4 x 5 inches (11 x 13 cm)
Dutch ebonised frame
This small portrait is of a young man, staring inquisitively out towards the viewer. The realism of his appearance is striking, with great care taken in the depiction of the man’s features - for example, his full lips and the slight bump in the bridge of his nose. The man wears a rich burgundy doublet and a black cap and is adorned with gold accessories, indicating a degree of wealth - it is likely that this is a miniature portrait for a wealthy patron. The warm flesh tones of this painting and the intricate rendering of the man’s curly brown hair demonstrate the artistry of the painter, who has successfully captured the image of youth within his brushstrokes.
Rembrandt’s Pupils
Upon completing his artistic education, Rembrandt opened a studio and began to take students - the first of which were Gerrit Dou and Isaac Jouderville. The studio functioned as an art school, in which materials and guidance were provided - contrary to the studios of his peers, Rembrandt did not offer lodging to his pupils. The families of prospective pupils had to pay Rembrandt 100 guilders (enough for a house at the time) for this artistic education, and the profits from any works produced by pupils under Rembrandt would be paid to the master rather than kept by the student-artist - this contributed substantially to the master’s income. When taking on pupils, Rembrandt looked for those who could already paint, and guided their styles to reflect his. By choosing pupils who were somewhat experienced artists, Rembrandt had an array of painters that could be involved at any stage of assisting with the creation of his works - in this way, Rembrandt’s pupils often functioned as studio assistants as well. In order to perfect Rembrandt’s style, pupils would paint copies of their teacher’s works, sometimes adding their own distinct variations. They would use the same subjects and models as Rembrandt himself, and would accompany him on outdoor trips to paint nature and landscapes. The extensive copying and utilisation of same source materials has rendered Rembrandt’s work and the work of his pupils difficult to differentiate, even in the modern era.At least 50 pupils were taught by Rembrandt, with many continuing on to become his studio assistants. A few graduated into successful artists in their own right - for example, Govaert Flinck...

Study of the Borghese Gladiator Sculpture
1837-1913
Oil on canvas, stamped 'ESK' verso
Image size: 28 3/4 x 23 ¼ inches (73 x 59 cm)
Gilt Frame
This painting is a study of the Borghese Gladiator, an acclaimed classical sculpture held in Rome. Casts of the statue exist all over the globe, and have been used by artists and students as a study of athletic anatomy. Indeed, the attention to detail that the artist displays in depicting the statue lends the painting an air of photographic realism. Not only has the artist rendered the athletic anatomy accurately, they have also perfectly painted the marble texture of the sculpture, demonstrating their keen artistic talent.
The back of the painting is stamped ‘ESK’, indicating that it was painted by an arts student taught under the South Kensington System syllabus. This student is likely Maria Brooks, who studied at the South Kensington Art School and produced, in 1872, a chalk drawing depicting the Borghese Gladiator statue...

The Fortune Teller
1881-1950
Oil on canvas, signed 'H.A Budd' lower right
Image size: 18 ½ x 14 ¾ inches (47 x 37.5cm)
Original frame
Rendered in an almost autumnal colour palette with Darnley Fine Art, Budd’s oil painting depicts a Romani Gypsy engaging in the practice of fortune-telling whilst an enraptured crowd watches on. Clasped in the fortune-teller’s hand is a crystal ball, whilst behind him is a wall on which a deck of cards is pinned. Crystallomancy and cartomancy are two ways in which fortunes have historically been told, and are two practices particularly associated with Roma communities. In communities where Romani people have historically been confined to the periphery, fortune-telling - or dukkering, as it is called in the Romani language - provided an opportunity to earn money whilst practicing their own culture.
Budd was known for his paintings depicting scenes of life from London, so it is likely that the setting of this painting is an anonymous London street. It is easy to see a continuity between the performer depicted in this work from the early 20th century, and the variety of magicians and acrobats enticing crowds in today’s world.
Herbert Ashwin Budd
Herbert Ashwin Budd was born in Staffordshire in 1881. In his twenties, he was an apprentice lithographer at Allbut & Stanley, and was eventually elected a member of the Amalgamated Society of Lithographic Artists in 1901. Between 1903 and 1907, Budd studied at the Hanley School of Art before winning a scholarship to study at South Kensington’s Royal College of Art.
Budd was an Associate of the Royal College of Arts and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the Ipswich Art Club - he was also given an Honourable Mention at the 1927 Paris Salon. In the 1930s, he worked for London Transport and designed their travel posters, whilst also teaching at St Martin’s School of Art until 1949.Herbert Ashwin Budd passed away in 1950, leaving behind a wonderful artistic legacy with his striking oil paintings of London...

Jeremy Andrews works in oils and uses traditional techniques such as under painting and glazing. He works meticulously to recreate what he sees, observing the finest details and subtleties in light and form.
A renowned portraitist, Andrews also specialises in landscapes and animal paintings. He lived and worked on a farm for a number of years and gained inspiration from the flora and fauna that surrounded him. He views this as a natural progression, imbuing his landscapes with the same depth and emotion that are perceptible in his other works.

In this atmospheric scene a drunk is walking home, he must be causing some noise as another person is leaning out of his window to the right looking at him.
The artist has captured old London beautifully with the old bins, advertising on the walls and the cats bemused by the drunken figure. It sometimes takes an outsider such as Sancha to appreciate the beauty of the scene.

Self portrait in London
Francisco Sancha y Lengo was born in Malaga in 1874. Britain’s enemies in Europe had long recognised Ireland as a weak point in Britain’s defences. The attempt by the French during the French revolutionary Wars to land troops in Ireland in 1798 as depicted here became known as the Battle of Tory Island.

Once she had graduated from the Slade School of Art, Evelyn continued to draw every day for the rest of her life. Her drawings are enlightening not only for their skill and subject matter, but also for their ability to teach us her working process. From loose compositional sketches, Evelyn swiftly progressed to detailed life studies for the figures in her paintings. Choosing to draw mainly on a grey wove paper in pencil and pastel, Evelyn produced hundreds of figure studies. Her rigorously-examined double studies of clothed and nude figures are particularly fascinating and underline the artist’s obsession with the human form and her desire for accuracy. A deep understanding of anatomy is obvious in this drawing and looking at the work you feel as though you can reach out and feel the muscle and bone under the skin, that you could feel the pulse of life through the soft skin.
Evelyn de Morgan
Born into a landowning family, from an early age Evelyn De Morgan, née Pickering, demonstrated a precocious artistic talent and a passionate desire to pursue a career as an artist, writing in her diary on her seventeenth birthday ‘Art is eternal, life is short… I have not a moment to lose’ (Evelyn De Morgan’s Diary, 30 August 1872, De Morgan Foundation Archive). Her maternal uncle, the artist John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope encouraged her talents and accompanied her on her first formative journeys to Italy where she discovered the Renaissance masters, particularly Botticelli. Overcoming initial parental opposition, Evelyn enrolled at the newly formed Slade School in 1873, one of the first women to do so.
The Slade revolutionised women’s artistic education by allowing female students to study the nude from life alongside their male counterparts. Whilst at the Slade she began to submit work under her middle name Evelyn, rather than her Christian name Mary, as its gender ambiguity offered a chance for her work to be judged on its own merit.

Nora Summers was a British painter, printmaker and photographer who grew up in an engineering family. She studied at Bristol School of Art before progressing on to the Slade School in London where she developed under the teaching of Henry Tonks from 1907-1910. Her work was often characterised by its serene, still quality, here her landscape captures a forest scene as a poignant documentation of the moment- a fleeting memory, frozen in time. She was predominantly shown in the NEAC as well as the Walker Art Gallery.
