Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner
The Rug Merchant, 19th Century Orientalist Oil Signed Oil Painting, 1879

About the Item

Oil on canvas, signed and dated '1879' bottom right Image size: 38 x 59 1/2 inches (96.5 x 151 cm) Ornate Orientalist style gilt frame Carl Werner Carl Friedrich Heinrich Werner was born in Weimar in 1808, the son of a piano teacher and a singer. He studied both painting and architecture in his youth, before deciding that the former was his true vocation. It was Werner’s depictions of architectural monuments that first brought him recognition. He exhibited in Dresden, and this attracted the attention of the Director of the Academy of Fine Arts and the subsequent award of a travelling scholarship. Encouraged by Goethe, Werner decided to go to Italy. There he spent the next twenty years honing his skills in Rome, Venice, Bologna and Florence. It was not until 1852 that Werner made his first trip to the Orient, visiting the Holy Land and Egypt. In 1864 he visited Egypt again, travelling the whole length of the Nile. On his return he also visited Jaffa, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, Beirut and Damascus, taking detailed sketches for his future compositions. He totally immersed himself into the society, and his works certainly capture the vitality and excitement of the everyday moment. Werner sketched and then painted mostly architectural and landscape scenes, usually in watercolour although he is known to have painted a small number of oils. His historically interesting works are remarkable for their realism and precision of detail. He was also skilful in his depiction of light. Some of his best works are those of Jerusalem, particularly the Dome of the Rock which, unusually, he depicted from the inside - most travellers tended to paint it from a distance. It was impressive that Werner was inside at all since most non-Muslims were not allowed to enter the sanctuary. Werner exhibited regularly throughout his career; from 1858 at the Berlin Artists Society, from 1861 at the Berlin Academy and from 1870 at the Dresden Academy. He also exhibited in London from 1860 until 1878, once at the Royal Academy and frequently at the New Watercolour Society, of which he was an associate and later a member. In addition he was a member of the Venice Academy and exhibited his works in Italy. His paintings can be found in several major European galleries and museums, including the V&A, the Venice Museum and the National Gallery in Berlin. In 1882, at the age of 74 Werner became a watercolour professor at Leipzig Fine Arts. In 1891 he returned to Rome. He died two years later in Leipzig aged 85.

  • London Costmongers, Urban 20th Century English Oil
    Located in London, GB
Attributed to Mary Adshead 1904 - 1995 London Costmongers Oil on canvas Image size: 30 x 36 inches Framed Costermongers were London people that sold fruit and veg and other ‘perishables’ from barrows. Often wheeling and then stationing their barrow on the street, so their customers could easily come and buy from them. Costermongers were fiercely independent, rebellious in their dress and outlook, and had little time for ‘middle class moralising’ and attempts to suppress or restrict their way of life. (Much like modern teenagers) The men depicted stop work for a break with cups of tea and a few read the newspapers. Next to the man with the yellow apron can be seen some cakes on a plate. A work place , a factory can be seen in the distance on the right. It is possible that the painting depicts a cabmen's shelter, as some did serve outside and many still survive today in London. The style of the painting is very much that of a student of the Slade School in London and has similarities with other artists work such as James Batemen or Herbert Ashwin Budd. On the back of the painting it has in chalk the name 'Rhoades', which could refer to the artist Geoffrey Hamilton Rhoades...

James Stroudley 1906 -1985 Reclining Nude Oil on canvas, signed lower left Image size: 17 x 25 inches Original frame James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year. From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. However, much of his later work was abstract. In 1971, his former student, Peter Coker...

This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...
