Seashell Solar Chandelier, Contemporary Solar-Powered Lighting, Customizable
By Nina Edwards Anker
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Solar chandelier, a customizable solar-powered lighting installation for the off-the-grid living room, comprises photovoltaic modules that power LED bulbs to illuminate translucent seashells to provide ambient lighting. The piece aims to demystify PV technology by exposing its components in a legible manner, so that the electrical boards, wires and batteries of the PV modules are clearly visible and comprehensible. Additionally, with a passing breeze, the chandelier becomes a wind chime. It also functions as a type of solar clock as it illuminates automatically at dusk, highlighting hourly solar and seasonal rhythms. The chandelier must be placed in front of a window to gather solar power. The Solar Chandelier lowers electric bills, eliminates wires and outlets, offers multi-directional ambient light, and casts patterns on surrounding surfaces like wallpaper. It can be customized to each setting.     The solar pieces by nea studio...

Plume Solar Chandelier, Contemporary Solar-Powered Lighting, Customizable
By Nina Edwards Anker
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Plume Solar chandelier, a customizable solar-powered lighting installation for the off-the-grid living room, comprises photovoltaic modules that power LED bulbs to illuminate feathers to provide ambient lighting. The piece aims to demystify PV technology by exposing its components in a legible manner, so that the electrical boards, wires and batteries of the PV modules are clearly visible and comprehensible. This off-the-grid solar-powered chandelier combines shimmering soft black feathers to counterpoint the reflective black photovoltaic panels. It also functions as a type of solar clock as it illuminates automatically at dusk, highlighting hourly solar and seasonal rhythms. The Plume Solar Chandelier lowers electric bills, eliminates wires and outlets, offers multi-directional ambient light, and casts patterns on surrounding surfaces like wallpaper. Algae Sconces, Contemporary Customizable Lighting in Natural, Organic Algae
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A subset of the algae lighting line, the Algae Sconces are the minimal expression of how this material can serve a range of products and design installations. Algae is molded into translucent cylindrical lamp shades that glow from the interior. The algae species are carefully selected and treated with organic components to shape them into cylinders. The result is a translucent texture that smoothly filters the light, creating a warm environment of yellowish green tones. The frame is golden-hued brass or bronze to help reflect the LED bulbs in a warmer light. As LED lighting technology improves, its color range will widen; currently, however, the range is still narrow and therefore benefits from skillful filtering and dispersion tactics. Algae is translucent and has sculptural potential; its colors are varied, rich and vibrant. In our research in LED lighting, we have found that an important way to make LED light warmer is to filter it through natural materials. Texture and shape are also main factors; the unpredictable form of each algae shade after the drying/molding process, as well as its tactile textured surface, help to dissipate the light in a manner that glows more softly. After years of research, the nea studio...

Latitude Light, 3D Printed Contemporary Solar-Powered Translucent, Customizable
By NEA Studio
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Latitude light is a translucent 3D printed indoor or outdoor solar-powered sculptural lamp that emits atmospheric light. It can be fabricated in many variants according to the customer’s location and color preference. A global product that is customized for specific locations, the lamp’s geometry can be automatically updated in a digital file so that the tilt of the solar panel changes according to latitude. By tilting the panel parametrically at different angles, the light’s capacity for electric power generation is optimized in its perpendicularity to the sun’s rays for different latitudes. The portable light needs to bathe in daylight for eight hours a day, with the solar panel facing the sky. Latitude Lights illuminate automatically at dusk, remaining lit for around 5 hours. Because they are powered by the Sun, there are no switches or wires necessary. Latitude Lights have no on or off switch. Latitude Light is the winner of the 2018 Made in NYC Award and the 2017 A' Design Award. It is representative of NEA...
