Gabrielle Brill (née Bernhard) was born in 1913 to a prominent Jewish family in Berlin, Germany. Brill began studying art at a young age and in 1933 her family relocated to Vienna, Austria to escape rising antisemitism in Germany and allow Brill to continue her artistic studies. In 1936, Brill went to visit her older sister, an art teacher in Florence, where she met her first husband, Wolfgang Wasow.
