Dame Lucie Rie, 1950's Porcelain Footed Bowl with Manganese Glaze.

Dame Lucie Rie, 1950's Porcelain Footed Bowl with Manganese Glaze.

By Lucie Rie

Located in London, GB

This is a great example of a Lucie Rie iconic hand-thrown, footed bowl with manganese glaze. It is thinly potted and slightly pulled into an ovoid shape with an undulating rim. The running glaze is subtle whilst adding an individual element to the decoration of the bowl. The bowl bears the artist's monogram seal mark under. Lucie Rie was an Austrian-born British ceramics artist. Rie’s works, usually consisting of hand-thrown pots, bottles, and bowl forms, are noteworthy for their Modernist forms. Born in 1902 in Vienna, Austria, she studied pottery at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, a school of arts and crafts. In 1937, she won a silver medal at the Paris International Exhibition and by the following year, Rie moved to London to flee Nazi Austria. Once settled in the British capital, she maintained a small studio and continued to produce pottery and small clay objects, including ceramic buttons and jewellery which she sold to support herself. She was later joined by Hans Coper, a young artist who soon became a partner in her studio. She taught at the Camberwell School of Art from 1960...

Antique Victorian Silver-Plated Folding Biscuit Box, Shell Form, Sheffield, c. 1890 This exceptional antique Victorian silver-plated folding biscuit box is a rare and highly decorative example of late 19th-century English silverplate, crafted in Sheffield, circa 1890. Designed in an elegant shell form, the piece exemplifies the Victorian fascination with naturalistic motifs, sculptural metalwork, and refined domestic luxury. The shell-shaped body sits within a beautifully cast and chased frame, supported by richly detailed branch-form uprights—a hallmark of high-quality Victorian decorative silverware. The surface displays a soft, luminous silver patina, enhancing the sculptural curves and organic detailing while preserving its authentic antique character. One of the most remarkable features of this piece is its ingenious folding mechanism. The box opens smoothly into two symmetrical halves, revealing its original hand-pierced interior dividers, meticulously crafted to separate biscuits, sweets, or confections. When closed, the box is secured by exquisite laurel wreath loose-ring handles, a classical Victorian motif symbolising elegance, achievement, and refinement. Both functional and ornamental, this silver-plated container works beautifully as a biscuit box, sweet box, trinket holder, or tabletop centrepiece. It makes a striking statement on a dining table, sideboard, console, or display cabinet, and transitions effortlessly between traditional, eclectic, maximalist, and curated contemporary interiors. Whether styled in a formal dining setting or as a decorative accent, it brings undeniable presence, craftsmanship, and historical depth. The body is richly detailed with fluted shell patterns, symbolising classic European elegance, while the interior reveals delicate pierced openwork panels—both functional and decorative, enhancing airflow and visual sophistication. The framework is adorned with scrolling acanthus motifs, floral accents, and a central ring handle, making it as sculptural as it is practical. Raised on finely cast supports with intricate detailing, this piece embodies the luxury of antique silver tableware, ideal for serving biscuits, sweets, or as a statement centrepiece in refined interiors.
