Antique English Regency Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy with Silver Mounts

Located in Northampton, GB

FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING The Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy with Silver Mounts is an elegant early nineteenth century example dating to the reign of George III, circa 1810. Of oval form, the tea caddy is veneered in richly patterned tortoiseshell displaying warm amber and deep chestnut colouring throughout. The exterior is finished with finely worked rippled silver mounts framing the tortoiseshell. The simple shape and clean lines place the focus firmly on the natural pattern and colour of the tortoiseshell, which changes beautifully under light. Pieces combining tortoiseshell and silver were produced as luxury tea wares during the Georgian period, when tea remained an expensive household commodity stored securely within fitted caddies such as this example. The interior retains its original silver faced compartment with a pie crust border and floating tortoiseshell lid finished with a silver ball handle. The floating lid would originally have helped keep loose tea fresh while stored inside the caddy. Oval tortoiseshell tea caddies...
