Impressive pair of gilt and sculpted bronze candelabras with three branches. The stem of each candelabrum is a patinated bronze form of the winged goddess, Victory, who holds a gilt bronze torch in each of her hands. Her head is topped with a gilt bronze vase that transforms into the candelabra branches, which is embellished with griffins and rosettes. At the top of each candelabrum is a peacock standing on a globe, symbolizing the sun and immortality. Victory is standing on a cruciform-shaped base, which has a winged cupid on two sides and a caduceus on the other two sides. The intertwined snakes of the caduceus are a symbol of the Greek god Hermes (or the Roman god Mercury) and is a symbol of peace, eloquence and negotiation. Empire period. Perfect condition.
Our model is inspired by the projects of Charles Percier and Franc¸ois-Leonard Fontaine, famous architects of the Emperor. Their most important work, entitled Recueil de decorations inte´rieurs (Collection of interior decorations), was published in France at the, end of the 19th century. A rich bestiary of fantastic animals inspired by the Middle Ages adorns the whole.

This fine clock set is crafted in patinated bronze, red marble and ornamented throughout with exquisite ormolu. It is the work of Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, a French company highly celebrated for their superlative clock sets and garnitures.
The set comprises a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock is set on an oval plinth of red marble with ormolu feet. To the front of the plinth is set a relief panel in patinated bronze. Upon the plinth is set a fluted column of patinated bronze with ormolu flowers and banding, surmounted by an ormolu urn. The circular clock dial is set to the front of the column, with a face of red marble and Roman numerals in ormolu. Next to the clock face column stands the full length figure of the Greek goddess of hunting, Diana, holding a torch cast in patinated bronze. The pair of flanking candelabra are set on square plinths of red marble with canted angles and ormolu feet. Atop this are set fluted columns of patinated bronze, and an ovoid urn with relief panels with reliefs of classical figures on the main body and twin ormolu handles. This pair of candelabra made in France, circa 1880 are designed in the Renaissance Revival style. Well cast in a large number of separate parts and patinated and polished to create drama and decorative detail the pair is of a nice scale without being overly large. Cast as a central column raised on a pyramidal pierced base. The base is centered by grotesque masks and foliate sprays raised up on feet. The shaft leads up to four large branched arms also cast with corresponding foliate sprays issuing from more grotesques. The combination of color and casting create a lively play of light.
