A striking sculptural mantel clock depicting a hunter sounding his horn, with a long gun in his other hand and a dark-finished deer at his feet. Oak foliage, acorns and a rocky landscape frame the scene above an elaborate Rococo-style case. The figure rewards close inspection: textured clothing, decorative cuffs, buckled straps and carefully defined facial features contrast with the smoother surfaces of the tall boots. A small hunting accessory hangs freely from a twisted-wire suspension, adding a distinctive dimensional detail to the composition. The modelling extends throughout the surrounding foliage and the textured surface of the animal. The richly ornamented case combines scrolling supports, pierced decoration, floral sprays and shell motifs. Two pale inset panels with applied gilt ornaments flank the white enamel dial, which features black Roman numerals, a minute track and open-circle hands. The gilding retains an attractive warm colour and gives the clock a strong decorative presence. The movement bears two stamps: “Vincenti & Cie - Médaille d’Argent” and “Fabrique Edward Barrard & Cie de Paris.” These inscriptions identify the names marked on the movement; the maker of the decorative case remains unconfirmed. The accompanying original winding key is included. Dimensions: Height 42 cm × width 34 cm × depth 13 cm (16.54 × 13.39 × 5.12 inches). Weight: 5.6 kg (12.35 lb) Condition: Good overall antique condition, with well-preserved gilding and light surface wear consistent with age. Localised enamel loss is present around the left winding aperture. Fine lines resembling cracks are visible in the decorative surround beneath the left inset panel. The rear movement opening is uncovered, as shown in the photographs. The movement was tested for 24 hours, during which the clock ran steadily and the striking mechanism operated correctly. Rare Thomas Cole for Barry of London Amethyst-Set Strut Clock, 1855 An exceptionally rare and possibly unique Thomas Cole gilt-brass strut clock, made for the celebrated London retailer Barry, dating to 1855. This extraordinary clock represents Thomas Cole at his most inventive and decorative. The elaborate gilt-bronze case is profusely hand engraved with scrolling foliate ornament and, most unusually, is mounted with no fewer than 22 purple amethyst cabochons of varying sizes. The amethysts form an integral part of the design rather than simply being applied decoration. Large oval cabochons accent the lower corners and elaborate upper crest, while smaller stones are positioned symmetrically around the perimeter of the case. Combined with the richly engraved and gilded surface, they give the clock an almost jewel-like appearance. At 30 cm (11.8 inches) high and 23 cm (9.1 inches) wide, it is also a particularly substantial and imposing example of Cole's strut clocks. The gilt dial is beautifully engraved throughout with exceptionally dense scrolling decoration surrounding an oval Roman numeral chapter ring. Further engraved foliate ornament decorates the surrounding gilt mask, while the dial is finished with elegant blued-steel hands. The reverse retains Cole's characteristic folding strut and is signed and numbered: THOS. COLE FOR BARRY LONDON No. 1253 The serial number 1253 enables the clock to be dated to circa 1855, during the mature period of Thomas Cole's independent production. Of particular significance is the extraordinary amethyst-set case. Despite the extensive variety of Thomas Cole clocks documented and illustrated in J. B. Hawkins' authoritative reference work on Thomas Cole, no directly comparable clock mounted with amethyst cabochons appears amongst the recorded examples. The highly individual design, lavish use of 22 amethysts, considerable size and retailer's signature therefore raise the intriguing possibility that this clock was produced as a special commission or even as a unique piece for Barry of London. Thomas Cole (1800–1864) was one of the most innovative English clockmakers and designers of the Victorian period. His distinctive strut clocks combined precision clockmaking with exceptionally accomplished metalwork, engraving and ornamental design. The finest examples transcend conventional clockmaking and can be considered works of decorative art in their own right. This clock is an especially striking expression of Cole's work: an unusually large, richly engraved and extensively gem-set example whose design does not appear to have a direct counterpart amongst the examples recorded in the standard literature. An impressive French mantel clock dating to the mid-19th century, featuring an elegant combination of richly gilt bronze and finely patinated bronze. The sculptural composition depicts a young boy seated on horseback, raising a riding crop while gently holding the reins. Set upon a naturalistic rocky landscape with foliage and a bird, the finely modelled group rises above an elaborate Rococo Revival gilt-bronze clock case adorned with scrolling acanthus, flowers, grape clusters and gardening attributes. The beautifully pierced gilt-bronze case frames a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, creating a striking contrast with the dark patinated sculpture above. The original gilt surface remains exceptionally vibrant and well preserved, giving the clock remarkable visual presence. The movement bears the original “Les Japy Fils – Médaille d’Argent 1844 et 1849” award medallion. Founded by Frédéric Japy in 1777, the Japy workshops became one of the foremost manufacturers of French clock movements during the nineteenth century. The medallion commemorates the silver medals awarded to the firm at the French National Industrial Expositions of 1844 and 1849 and supports a manufacture date after 1849. The movement has been tested for more than twenty-four hours and is currently running correctly. Both the timekeeping and striking functions operate properly at the time of cataloguing. The clock is accompanied by its original winding key, a later pendulum and removable rear brass cover. A substantial and highly decorative French mantel clock that combines excellent sculptural quality, beautifully preserved gilding and a documented Les Japy Fils movement, making it an outstanding display piece for both traditional and eclectic interiors.
