Exhibiting the fine design and craftsmanship of French clockmakers Raingo Frères (Raingo Brothers), this impressively large clock, measuring over 1 meter tall ( 3 feet +), is an example of the “Second Rococo” period beginning circa 1830, when the highly ornate "Cartel" style of the early 18th century came back into fashion. The clock is crowned at top center by the figure of a putto or cherub, holding in one hand a dove and the other a garland of flowers. This allegorical figure can represent innocence or purity, and was a popular subject for sculptors of the 19th century. The term "Cartel clock" comes from the French "Pendule à Cartel" meaning roughly "clock in a frame for the wall" - the word "Cartel" meaning in this context "decorative frame". These clocks were almost always made from gilt bronze (also known as "ormolu") and highly decorated. An Important and Palatial French Louis XV Style 19th Century Gilt-Bronze and White Marble Cherub Mantel Clock, attributed to Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis Beurdeley, the casting and gilding by Graux-Marly, Paris, the movement by P. Marti et Cie. The large and impressive marble and two-tone finely chased gilt-bronze (Ormolu) and white marble body, with its original superb quality mercury satin-gilt and burnished gilt (ciselé et doré au mat), surmounted by two reclining cherubs amongst clouds, one holding a triumphant floral wreath, the other a floral bouquet strand, flanked to each side by floral swags and attributes of Love, with kissing doves, on a shaped base with a further cloud-borne cherub, above a scrolling foliate frieze and garlands of flowers, with a bow, a quiver, trumpets and arrows protruding through within the clouds, raised on toupie feet. The beautifully decorated circular white enamel dial with gold fleur-de-lis' jewels, with Roman and Arabic numerals, signed "Graux Marly, Paris - Rue du Parc-Royal, 8". The bell striking movement stamped: "S. Marti et Cie. Médaille de Bronze". Circa: Paris, 1870's. The Jules Graux's Foundry was based at 8 rue du Parc-Royal from 1860, they exhibited at the last national exhibition in Paris in 1849 and again Paris in 1855. At the London exhibition of 1862 their entry was described as, "bronzes d'ameublement, cheminée et garniture de cheminée, lustres, vases, statues, groupes, objets de service de table, gueridon de malachite." They are recorded as exporting 35% of their production and as having made bronzes for the Hotel de la Commission. They also contributed to the Paris exhibition of 1867. By 1870 his sons M Graux-Marly took over the business from their father and, from then on, their works were stamped GRAUX-MARLY or GRAUX-MARLY FRÈRES. The foundry in renown for producing high-quality bronze castings, chasing and gilding, including clocks, candelabra, statuettes and other fine decorative works of art. Jules Graux - Graux-Marly Fondeurs also cast bronzes for many of the most renowned sculptors of the day, including but not limited to Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (French, 1827-1875), James Pradier - born Jean-Jacques Pradier (Swiss/French, 1790-1852), Emmanuel Frémiet (French, 1824-1910), Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (French, 1824-1887), Alfred Emmanuel Louis Beurdeley (French, 1847-1919) as well as reproducing important and popular antique, from the Renaissance and later models. The business continued in its traditional style with very few variations, until it was closed in 1895 and the remaining contents of the company were sold at the Galerie Geroges Petit. A unique late 19th century gilt bronze mounted parquetry cabinet by François Linke and Léon Messagé François Linke and Léon Messagé This unusual cabinet features a cube parquetry top with a back splash centered with a plume of bronze feathers and flowers, above a long single drawer with a bronze leaf-clasped scallop shell and two handles shaped as wings, the sides headed by foliate and flower-cast clasps. The cabinet was most likely made to store magazines or original phonograph records. Stamped FL under many of the bronze mounts, the lock stamped CT LINKE/PARIS Linke was born in Pankraz in Bohemia and was celebrated by the French as one of the greatest ébénistes of meubles de style at the turn of the century. He began his apprenticeship with a Bohemian master at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he toured Austria, settling and working in Vienna for two years. Linke arrived in Paris 1875, and by 1881 he had established his own small workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg St. Antoine. Taking 18th century styles as his starting point and adapting earlier styles to contemporary taste, Linke produced fine quality furniture, steadily expanding his business during the next 20 years. He firmly established his reputation after receiving a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. He continued to use international fairs as a means of exploring new markets, exhibiting at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, the Liege in Belgium and the 1908 Franco-British exhibition in London. Linke’s highly original designs sprang from the Régence and Rococo styles but were imbued with something quite new, Rococo curves were laden with gilt-bronze sculptural mounts in the tradition of A.-C. Boulle (1642-1732) or Charles Cressent (1685-1758). Stylistically, the new designs still adhered to the Rococo; the novelty, however, was Linke’s fusion of the Rococo with the liveliness and the fluidity of the ‘art nouveau’.
