This vintage mid-19th century French 3-piece garniture clock set is wonderfully designed in the Louis XVI style. The over size set includes an exceptional gilt bronze clock accented with attached detailed patinated sculpted putti figures on both sides. The clock rests on a platform embellished with elaborate florals and scrolls that complement its white enamel face with Roman numerals and featuring the maker, Raingo Freres, Paris. The clock has a French bell movement. A pair of sculpted gilt bronze candelabra with similar patinated bronze putti figures accompany this beautiful clock. Rare Thomas Cole for Barry of London Amethyst-Set Strut Clock, 1855 An exceptionally rare and possibly unique Thomas Cole gilt-brass strut clock, made for the celebrated London retailer Barry, dating to 1855. This extraordinary clock represents Thomas Cole at his most inventive and decorative. The elaborate gilt-bronze case is profusely hand engraved with scrolling foliate ornament and, most unusually, is mounted with no fewer than 22 purple amethyst cabochons of varying sizes. The amethysts form an integral part of the design rather than simply being applied decoration. Large oval cabochons accent the lower corners and elaborate upper crest, while smaller stones are positioned symmetrically around the perimeter of the case. Combined with the richly engraved and gilded surface, they give the clock an almost jewel-like appearance. At 30 cm (11.8 inches) high and 23 cm (9.1 inches) wide, it is also a particularly substantial and imposing example of Cole's strut clocks. The gilt dial is beautifully engraved throughout with exceptionally dense scrolling decoration surrounding an oval Roman numeral chapter ring. Further engraved foliate ornament decorates the surrounding gilt mask, while the dial is finished with elegant blued-steel hands. The reverse retains Cole's characteristic folding strut and is signed and numbered: THOS. COLE FOR BARRY LONDON No. 1253 The serial number 1253 enables the clock to be dated to circa 1855, during the mature period of Thomas Cole's independent production. Of particular significance is the extraordinary amethyst-set case. Despite the extensive variety of Thomas Cole clocks documented and illustrated in J. B. Hawkins' authoritative reference work on Thomas Cole, no directly comparable clock mounted with amethyst cabochons appears amongst the recorded examples. The highly individual design, lavish use of 22 amethysts, considerable size and retailer's signature therefore raise the intriguing possibility that this clock was produced as a special commission or even as a unique piece for Barry of London. Thomas Cole (1800–1864) was one of the most innovative English clockmakers and designers of the Victorian period. His distinctive strut clocks combined precision clockmaking with exceptionally accomplished metalwork, engraving and ornamental design. The finest examples transcend conventional clockmaking and can be considered works of decorative art in their own right. This clock is an especially striking expression of Cole's work: an unusually large, richly engraved and extensively gem-set example whose design does not appear to have a direct counterpart amongst the examples recorded in the standard literature.
