Desk cigar humidor designed by Erik Fleming (1894–1954) for Atelier Borgila. This is an extremely rare desk cigars humidor created in Stockholm Sweden by the Baron Erik Herman Fleming for the Atelier Borgila, back in 1941. The rare humidor has been masterfully hand crafted with faceted chamfered and art deco patterns in solid .925/.999 sterling silver with high polished finish. The elaborated lid depict the Swedish king's monogram of Gustav V, which implies that this piece was a kind of gift directly from the King of Sweden. It is fitted in the interior with a removable cigar holder and at the sides, with two hinged round handles. The interior's surfaces are completely lined up with cedarwood veneer. An exceptional museum quality piece with great Swedish craftmanship. Erik Herman Fleming He was a Swedish metalsmith, baron, teacher, and designer. He was one of the foremost Swedish silversmiths of his time, and worked as a Swedish court artisan. He was born on April 26, 1894, in Stockholm, to parents Sigrid Wilhelmina Amalia Söderhielm and Oscar Herman August Fleming. He attended the Althin's School of Painting in Stockholm from 1914 to 1915; and continued his studies in engineering at the Technische Universität Berlin from 1915 to 1917; and architecture at the University of Munich from 1917 to 1918. He learned silversmithing as a hobby initially, and enjoyed it enough to pursued further study under Anna Möcklin (who had worked for C. G. Hallberg and K. Andersson). In 1921, Fleming founded Atelier Borgila, a silver workshop and royal court supplier in Stockholm. C. F. Larsson was hired as the lead foreman for Atelier Borgila. Additionally Fleming taught metal arts at Konstfack in Stockholm, where he became head teacher of metal arts from 1947 until his death in 1954. He was the father of the silversmith Lars Fleming (1928–2025). Fleming's work is in the museum collection at the National-Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Atelier Borgila This is a prestigious Swedish silversmithing workshop founded in Stockholm in the early 1920s by the baron and designer Erik Fleming (1894–1954). Considered the premier silver firm in Sweden during the mid-20th century, the workshop is renowned for its "Swedish Modern" style, characterized by simple elegance and minimalist decoration. Erik Fleming originally trained as an architect and engineer but became a silversmith almost by chance. He served as a purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden. One of his most notable works was an 800-piece dinner service created in 1933—a wedding gift from the Swedish people to Prince Gustaf Adolf and his wife, Sibylla. In 1943, he organized the first exhibition of modern jewelry in Sweden, helping to launch the careers of many post-war artists. Following Erik's death in 1954, his son, Lars Peter Eriksson Fleming, continued the workshop's legacy. Over the decades, renowned designers and silversmiths worked for Atelier Borgila, including: Sigurd Persson: One of Sweden's most influential designers. Rey Urban, Birger Haglund, and Claes Giertta. More than a kilo of sterling silver was needed to create this stunning rectangular tabletop box. Worked with the very complicated guilloche technique, it was then enamelled at high heat with translucent enamel to make the superb workmanship shine through. The fine rectangular miniature cm. 7.5 x 10.7 on vegetable ivory. The small masterpiece handmade by the painter Anna Maria Manfriani reproduces the famous portrait of Empress Eugenia de Montijo, by the painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter. An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare pair of large antique George V English sterling silver lyre candlesticks; an addition of our ornamental silverware collection. These exceptional antique George V English sterling silver candlesticks have been modelled in the form lyre. The upper portion of the stringed instrument is surmounted with a swept oval capital, encompassed with embossed concave batwing decoration. The capitals retain the original detachable hallmarked push fit sconces, each embellished with thread decorated borders to the rim. The column of each candlestick features details replicating the opposing scrolling frame and five-strings of the musical instrument. Each oval swept base is embellished with fluted batwing decoration, accented with further thread decoration to the rim. These antique candlesticks have weighted bases and retain the original hallmarked silver lined underside. Such large candlesticks, modelled in the form of lyre, are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition These rare sterling silver candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and are in exceptional condition. Each candlestick has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl. Fire enameled miniatures: On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature colors which are as many colored crystals, ground and reduced to a very fine, almost impalpable powder washed and purified in distilled water with the addition of small quantities of deoxidizing acids which, diluted with essential oils (usually essential oil of solder), can be mixed to form a palette of colors. With very fine sable hair brushes you draw the subject starting from the perimeter and then gradually adding various layers of color. It is necessary to carry out various firings very often so that the colors harden and are not absorbed by the underlying glaze as, during the subsequent firings at 750 ° C, during liquefaction, it would spread irremediably. Hence the need to form the painting a little at a time, cooking it numerous times. Therefore it is necessary to proceed with numerous retouching, often overlapping different colors that only the painter's experience knows. A beautiful miniature needs from 20 to over 50 firings and is finished when the painter deems he does not have to further intervene.
