An original Art Deco ceramic vase by Thomas Forester & Sons, crafted in Staffordshire, England during the early 1930s. This distinctive piece belongs to the firm’s ‘Athens’ collection—a short-run series now highly regarded among collectors of British ceramics and Art Deco pottery. The vase is defined by its elongated tubular profile, flaring subtly to form a softly bulging centre. Its surface is decorated with rows of acanthus leaves in pale blue relief, curling rhythmically around the body. The crisp blue detailing sits against a backdrop of deep russet and ochre glazes, a palette typical of Forester’s output in the early 20th century and evocative of the broader Art Deco design movement in Britain. Vintage hand-thrown vase features complex Crater glaze in off-white and espresso brown colors. Minimal color palette and streamlined shape of the piece allow the textured glaze with variations from semi-matte to high gloss to take the spotlight; slightly asymmetrical rim adds hand-crafted, Organic Modern mood to the vase design. The vase is personally signed by Douglas Ferguson on the bottom with his name and "Pigeon Forge Pottery Tenn". The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings. Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze. In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...

With its delightful painted representations of the four seasons and bacchanalian scenes, this ‘bleu celeste’ garniture demonstrates the technical excellence of Sevres factory porcelain. On top of this, the porcelain vases are beautifully decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, expertly cast by Henri Picard, the manufacturer and gilder to Emperor Napoleon III. This garniture is comprised of a central jardinière and a pair of flanking vases. The jardinière features a wide porcelain body, which is topped by a gilt bronze guilloche-patterned neck. This is fitted with two geometric handles, which terminate in cherubs masks. The jardinière body is finely decorated with a continuous painting of putti playing together in a woodland setting. One putti holds the pinecone-tipped staff carried by followers of Bacchus (or Dionysus), the god of wine and ecstasy. Several putti ride on a goat, led on a harness by other putti. This painting is edged with jewelled and parcel gilt decoration, set against a bright ‘bleu celeste’ ground. The jardinière stands on a shaped gilt bronze stem, its top encircled by a band of stiff leaves, its middle by a laurel wreath, and its foot by beading. The jardinière is placed on a square gilt bronze plinth, which is decorated with grape-form finials, hung draperies and foliate motifs, and is set on four beaded toupie feet. The pair of vases are similar to the jardinière in their design. They feature ovoid ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain bodies, which are decorated with continuous paintings of the four seasons, within gilt and jewelled frames. Winter is depicted in a scene showing putti huddled together on a sleigh in a snowy landscape, and autumn by cherubs reaping crops with a sickle. Spring is shown by cherubs wearing flower wreaths and dancing while holding garlands, and summer by putti picking grapes and drinking wine. The vases’ bodies are topped by pointed gilt and jewelled ‘bleu celeste’ porcelain lids, crowned by gilt bronze grape finials. Like the jardinière, the vases are fitted with gilt bronze cherub...
