Indian Arivalmanai Culinary Cutting Tool
Located in New Orleans, LA
Originating from the Kerala region of Southern India, this 19th century arivalmanai, or culinary cutting instrument, is a traditional tool used in the preparation of vegetables throughout India. Comprising an engraved steel blade mounted upon a carved wood base, the user would place their weight on the wooden base by either sitting or kneeling, and prepare their ingredients accordingly. The craftsmanship and size of this fascinating relic denotes its usage in a Hindu temple setting, as offering food to the deities is believed to direct the mind towards spirituality.
Food plays an important role in Hindu worship, and because of the veneration of the cow and belief in non-violence, most followers follow a vegetarian diet. The vast majority of Hindu religious...

Fantastic 19th Century Double Butcher Block Kitchen Island from Dijon, France
Located in Dallas, TX
This large double butcher block was hand-crafted in the late 1800’s, by the Xavier Aubert Factory in Dijon, France. A metal plate is affixed to the front façade of the butcher block that reads “Usines X. Aubert materiel & fournitures Dijon”. It has been recently restored and waxed, bringing it back to it’s original color and consistency, all while retaining its character as a heavily used French kitchen work table.
Shaped from decades of use in a French boucherie, the top of the block is comprised of three sections of parquetry arranged in an offset checkerboard pattern. A thick frieze, which has also been shaped from repeated use, has polished steel brackets on the corners. The brackets have been stamped “Trussant et Cie” (founded late 19th century), which specializes in materials for supplies in the food trades, such as caterers and butchers.
Beneath the frieze are two drawers with round metal pulls. The bottom edge of each drawer has been hand-carved with a scalloped motif. The corners of the frieze have rectangular joints adorned with raised lozenges in the center. There are two more joints in the center of the frieze (one in the front and one in the back) that are embellished with a protruding diamond. Each of these six joints have tapering baluster legs with fluting extending beneath.
The dimensions and the weight of the butcher block make this a great item to use in a kitchen. One section of the top has two 16 ¾ inch long cutouts that were once used to hold the butcher’s knives and saws. You could use these slots to hold a linen drapery...
