Large size and great design, antique tantalus. This wonderful condition and rare, three crystal bottles holding, tiger oak tantalus will look great everywhere. This handcrafted work of beauty dates from the late 1800s and it comes with a variety of striking details and compartments. The two folding lids come with beautifully silvered brass hinges and the lock works perfectly via the original key. It is only when you have opened the lids that you can press the silvered button in the middle (it is on a stick) to open the secret drawer below. In the back of the secret drawer is a game that we have never seen before (see image 11) and we don't know if it is complete. The secret drawer can also be used to keep decks of cards and alike. Also, only when the lids are open, will you be able to take out the bottles as well. For those who did not yet know, these striking 'minibars' with lock and key were created so that the butler or maid or any other non-family member could not secretly drink the very expensive liquids that these decanters would have held. A stunning French Napoleon III Second Empire Period (1852-1870) Cave À Liqueur with assortment of fine quality hand blown cut crystal Baccarat and Moser glassware, consisting of four decanters / carafes and sixteen stemmed liqueur glasses, all with luxurious gilded ornamentation. The exterior of the large tantalus box features rich highly figured burl walnut, contrasting exotic woods marquetry inlays, framed by ebonized molding. Exquisitely hand-crafted in France in the 19th century, most likely Parisian work, exceptionally executed design, this remarkable antique makes for an outstanding presentation piece, that's as functional as it is stunning. Depicting rectangular shaped chest form with curvacious serpentine molded front panel and protruding trim, having a hinged-lid folding lift-top, flanking a pair of hinged panel sides that swing back, creating an open bar display cabinet, showcasing a collection of French Baccarat and Bohemian Moser Glassworks crystal drinkware. Presented is an exquisite French Napoleon III-period “Cave à Liqueur”, or tantalus, in rich rosewood. This elegant bar set opens by means of a hinged lid, inlaid with “Liqueurs” at top, to reveal a fitted interior, complete with its set of four cut glass decanters with stoppers and twelve matching cordial glasses.
