Mechanical Bank Speaking Dog By The Shepard Co Ca 1885; with Original Wooden Box

By Shepard Hardware Company

Located in Incline Village, NV

Manufactured in 1884 by the Shepard Hardware Company in Buffalo, New York, this cast iron mechanical bank measures 7 1/8" long and is in excellent all original condition and paint, especially considering that the Shepard Company did not use a primer rendering their surface more vulnerable than say, the Steven's Company. There is no touch up or repaint, and no restoration of any kind. Colors of bright red on the dress, flesh tones, tan colored dog, and maroon base are all very bright and crisp. The bank is accompanied by the original wooden box in which it was originally shipped; a very special find and charming piece of Americana. Rare to find the original box. The bank and box came directly from an estate and the original owner, and I have owned it since then for over 35 years. The theme of the bank depicts a young Victorian girl playing with her golden retriever. It is one of only four antique mechanical banks...

American Pottery Pig Bank, Circa 1880's

Located in Incline Village, NV

American pottery still bank in the shape of a pig, used for saving coins (usually pennies) to encourage children the importance of thrift. Pottery still banks are somewhat scarce since the typical way to remove coins was to smash the bank open, albeit, with this particular example, perhaps a knife was used for coin removal (note the wear to the coin slot---see images) or perhaps the additional wear is also from many coins having been deposited. The bank is in good all original condition , from an unknown potter (unmarked) circa 1880's, and probably a variant of #633 "Two Toned Pig" in Andy Moore's "The Penny Bank Book" written in 1984 when collecting pottery banks...

Malmaison de Gien French Faïence Blue on White Ironstone Dinner Plate

By Gien

Located in Philadelphia, PA

From the faïencery Gien, French ironstone dinner plates in the Malmaison pattern, circa 1871-1875. Transfer printed in blue on a white ironstone body, the pattern shows a wide cartouche and floral repeating border with a running border on the rim. The plate is molded with four panels that align with the printed pattern. A charming, clean look - typically French. Amongst the many faience manufacturers in the 19th century, the reputation of the Gien manufacturers is equal to those of the factories of Creil-Monterau, Longwy, and Sarreguemines. Beginning in 1821 in an old convent in Minimes, The Gien factory began producing faience and Terre de Fer dinnerware using...
