About the Item

This is a finely crafted sterling silver salt cellar by Gorham Silversmiths, hallmarked for the year 1872. Measuring approximately 3 inches wide by 2 inches high, the piece reflects the elegant refinement and high craftsmanship of late 19th-century American silver. The cellar features a rounded, drum-like body with a high-polish finish, accentuated by a series of horizontal engine-turned bands encircling both the top and bottom edges. These parallel lines add a sense of structure and classicism to the form. On each side, there is a graceful applied wire handle, giving it a balanced, neoclassical appearance while offering functional utility. The piece is supported by four ornately cast feet, each terminating in ball details and subtle scrollwork, lending a delicate yet stable stance to the cellar. The clean interior and has a clear glass interior liner which is removable for easy cleaning. Overall, this piece is a beautiful and rare example of early Gorham hollowware — practical in form, yet rich in decorative subtlety, and a testament to the enduring artistry of 19th-century American silverwork.
